Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Reprint. VG+/0/reprint. A good solid copy printed for the Bicentennial Floridiana Facsimile Series. The Sketches of St. Augustine was originally published in 1848 by Rufus King Sewall who was the minister of the local Presbyterian Church. Sewall and a prominent merchant from St. Augustine decided to write a tourist promotion book about St. Augustine, with Sewall responsible for the writing. He managed to insult and offend the Minorcan population of the town--and was shortly off to a new start in Philadelphia with his family. Sewall little book also managed to slur the Hispanic population, but had little effect on Florida's religious or ethnic preceptions; shortly before the first publication of this book, Florida elected a Jewish Senator, and few years later, a Roman Catholic Senator. Book is 69 pages with a rather long General Editor's Preface, a rather long introduction with notes, and a 12 page index. Book is clean and has no wear to exterior; nice gold Bicentennal Embelm on front with gold lettering, gold lettering to spine. No marking or writing, but a little foxing around the edge of the front free endpaper(none to interior of book). Binding tight and solid, pages very lightly tanned, and a few b&w illustrations. Nice pocket size. Comes to you in an acid free document bag for storage. I can have it in the mail to you tomorrow. BASI.

SEWALL, R. K. Sketches of St. Augustine. With a View of its History and Advantages as a Resort for Invalids. Philadelphia: Martin E. Harmstead, 1849. 2nd ed. 12mo. 6, [5]-10, [7]-100 pp. Orig. cloth. Binding is rubbed and somewhat soiled. Minor staining to the fore-edge of the textblock. Penciled brackets in the margins. A good to very good copy. Howes C-304. Sabin 79439. Servies 3498. Originally issued in 1848 and as Howes notes, usually missing leaf containing pp. 39-40. This second edition is a complete reissue of the original edition (and as such contains the oft deleted leaf) as well as a 30-page supplementary chapter (pp. 70-100) in which Sewall discusses, among other things, the scandalous leaf with its anti-Minorcan sentiment. Additionally, a preface to the second edition is inserted between pp. 6 & 7, creating the awkward pagination. Nevertheless, the text is complete as issued. This second edition was issued with and without the 6 plates of the first. This present copy is without the plates.
