Three ANS (holiday cards) from Sebald and his wife, to Smith-Hutton and his wife. 3. One TLS from Sebald's wife, Edith, to Smith-Hutton's wife in 1981 discussing Sebald's death in 1980. 4. Obituary of Edith Sebald (April, 1981). Shelved in Room G. Ambassador William J. Sebald (1901-1980) worked with the Office of Naval Intelligence in Japan during World War II. He later served in various capacities alongside General MacArthur where he became Ambassador, Chairman of the Allied Council, and political advisor to Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP). He would go on to serve as Ambassador to Burma (1952-1954) and Australia (1957-1961). [See the U.S. Naval Institute Oral History of Sebald, available online]. Captain Henri Smith-Hutton (1901-1977) was U.S. Naval attache to the US Embassy in Tokyo when the war broke out, where he was interned for six months before being repatriated. He went on to work as fleet intelligence officer on the staff of Admiral E.J. King, who was CominCh from 1942-1944 (where he worked alongside Sebald). 1378924. Special Collections.
