Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Glamorous aid worker Emma McCune conformed to none of the stereotypes: although driven and committed to her work she was at least partially attracted to Africa because it enabled her to live in a style she could not achieve in Britain, and she was famous in East Africa for wearing mini-skirts and for her affairs with African men. Initially much admired, if also suspect for her social flair, she appalled the aid community with her marriage to a local warlord, who was deeply enmeshed in both rebellion and murder. She had fallen in love and, a rebel to the end, she insisted on following her feelings, even if it left her rejected by her fellow worker and in an ambiguous position - was she on the side of the refugees or the warmongers? This biography is also an evocation of the complexities and horrors of the Sudan, where Gordon of Khartoum lost his life and possibly his sanity campaigning against the slave trade, and where today life is so harsh that desperate families sell their children into slavery, hoping for a better life for the child, and hopeless children volunteer to be sold, grabbing at any opportunity for change, however slight, where boys grow up aspiring to be child soldiers and men dedicate their babies to war. Impotent among the dead and the dying, the well-educated, well-paid Western aid workers who try to impose order on this maelstrom are inevitably doomed to failure and, sometimes, are even complicit in creating human misery. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 2002 1st ed. INSCRIBED by author on title p. and signed "Deborah." 389pp. illus. hardback sm 4to: Fine in a Fine dj in Brodart poly cover [some faint edge foxing; else a nice crisp copy] A very nice signed copy of a well-researched and written account of the tragedy of civil war and mass famine in the southern Sudan at the end of the 1980s. The author tells this story of "an aid worker, a warlord, radical Islam, and the politics of oil" via the device of a mini-biography of Englishwoman Emma McCune. McCune (1964-93), a strikingly beautiful young aid worker, fell in love with the Sudan and improbably married a southern Sudanese warlord Riek Machar and became involved in the sink of Sudanese politics. Quite a tale indeed. Scroggins covered the Sudanese famine as a correspondent for the Atlanta newspapers. Jacket praise from Robert D. Kaplan, Kati Marton, Alex Shoumatoff, Francesca Marciano and David Lamb. Her book won The Nation magazine's Ridenhour Book Prize. Inscribed by Author(s).

An handsome first edition/first printing in unread Very Near Fine condition in alike dustjacket, a bump on the back of the spine and cover separates this copy from As New; Deborah Scroggins charts the process by which McCune's romantic delusions led to her descent into the hell of Africa's longest-running civil war.
