The coral reefs are well developed; the fringing reefs that line much of the coast are conveniently close to the shore. Most of the marine invertebrates and fish of the reefs are colourful, and a surprisingly large number of them are unique to the area. Of the fish approximately 15% are endemic, and for some groups the percentage is even higher. Of the 14 species of the butterfly fish family (chaetodontidae), for example, seven are native to the Red Sea (though some range into the Gulf of Aden).
