Soft cover. Condición: New. Given that the nine provinces of British India as well as the 562 princely states that existed in August 1947 are not reflected on the map of India in the seventy-fifth year of its independence speaks volumes about the nation's ability to negotiate its political and administrative boundaries with its citizens. While the process of reimagining India through its constituent units - the states - has, on occasion, been due to administrative requirements, most restructuring in the internal boundaries is marked by the aspirations, assertions and adjustments of linguistic and/or ethnic groups seeking their place in the state and federal polity. For Dr Sanjeev Chopra, what started as research into land measurement instruments for revenue records and land settlements eventually became a narrative on mapping state boundaries and a record of the contemporary political history of India through its geography. The book includes captivating material from the reports of the States Reorganization Commission and Linguistic Reorganization Commission, records from state papers as well the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. A fascinating read about the multiple boundary adjustments for every state and union territory in India - from 1947 to the seventy-fifth year of independence - We, the People of the States of Bharat is the quintessential story of how India continues to redefine itself.

At the Crossroads (ATC) is a cracking good read for a book that deals with subjects that are normally as dry as dust. In this book Sanjeev Chopra an in service bureaucrat once again displays his flair for transforming flat arid topics dealing admittedly with critical issues in the contemporary context into racy Development thrillers crackling with wit and energy. The book is a good starting point for both the eclectic readers and the more serious students (of the development sector) wishing to hove up their knowledge on the various issues dealt with in this book. Sanjeev Chopra deals with widely disparate books in his book review section ranging from classics like David Luddens's The Agrarian History of South Asia to Former Cabinet Secretary TSR Subramanam's Governance in India. To make Ludden's The Agrarian History more accessible for the more faint hearted readers Chopra has actually taken the trouble to churn out a synoptic version of the book. Also an offer is a penetrating critique on leading communist thinker and commentator Mohit Sen's autobiography A Traveller and the Road which deals with interesting aspects of modern Indian history such as the Chinese Aggression the split in the CPI the emergence of Bangladesh and the emergency. Equally interesting in his double review Of Homes and Houses in Far Away Lands where he does a comprehensive study of two contemporary works of fiction Monica Ali's Bricklane and Jhumpa Lahiri's Namesake. In this review he analyses the attempt made by both writers to reflect the growing dichotomy of thought and action between two generations in far away lands starting from the generation that migrated from India in the sixties. The book is a tantalizing potpourri of all relevant contemporary issues and is a must read for all curious minds. 230 pp.

He feels that while the farmers have done a commendable job in achieving global competitive edge the failure of transparent price discovery mechanism agri warehousing and logistics has not given the commensurate returns to the farmers. He makes a strong case for agricultural co operatives taking the leadership position in the rural economy from agricultural extension services to supply of credit and partnership with processing firms for value addition. Given the size and structure of India's land holdings it would be best if co operatives established partnership farming with exporters and corporate to leverage their mutual strengths. The articles cover a wide range from the Arthashastra on agriculture to Sharad Joshi's discourse on agriculture and the Amber Blue and Green Boxes und the WTO pri.
