Reproductions of fish on endpapers is an example of the ancient Japanese art of Fish painting, gyotaku, where paint pigments are placed on the fish, then transferred onto a paper towel by blotting. The artist later adds line work and eye decoration to give the full effect. Library markings, edge wear.
