Next he was actively engaged in escort, minesweeping, and antisubmarine warfare in the North Sea, for which he was decorated Knight of the Iron Cross. Early in 1943, Admiral Ruge was assigned to duty in Italy, where he first directed Tunisian convoys, and, eventually he became commander of the German naval forces in Italy.
