Wraps. Craig, John A. Ilustrador. Presumed first edition/first printing. [2], 32, [12] p. Includes illustrations. Most illustrations in color. Bibliography. The Novartis Foundation produces Symposia, in which groups of leading scientists from a range of topics across biology, chemistry and medicine assembled to present papers and discuss results. The Novartis Foundation, originally known as the Ciba Foundation, is well known to scientists and clinicians around the world. From Wikipedia: "Sexually transmitted diseases (STD), also referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STI) and venereal diseases (VD), are illnesses that have a significant probability of transmission between humans by means of sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, anal sex and oral sex. Some STIs can also be contracted by using IV drug needles after their use by an infected person, as well as through any incident involving the contact of a wound with contaminated blood or through childbirth or breastfeeding. Sexually transmitted infections have been well known for hundreds of years, and venereology is the branch of medicine that studies these diseases. While in the past, these illnesses have mostly been referred to as STDs or VD, the term sexually transmitted infections (STIs) has been preferred by many up-to-date medical sources, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without having a disease. There are 19 million new cases of sexually transmitted infections every year in the United States, and, in 2005, the World Health Organization estimated that 448 million people aged 15 49 were being infected a year with curable STIs (such as syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia)." From an on-line posting: "Dr. Romanowski is a Clinical Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Alberta. She was Director of the Alberta STD Program from 1979 to 1998. She has been involved in HPV clinical trials for over a decade. Dr. Romanowski has published extensively and is an accomplished teacher at the undergraduate and graduate level." From an on-line posting: "Dr. Willie Harris is a Consultant Physician in Genitourinary/HIV Medicine at St Mary s Imperial NHS Trust. He has extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, infections of the genitourinary tract, and HIV and AIDS. He has published over two hundred peer reviewed papers, is the author of a number of textbooks and has contributed to many others. For over twenty years, he was the senior consultant of the GUM Department of St Mary s Hospital, Paddington, and was Medical Director of that hospital for seven years. His current clinical interests include the management of HPV infection and genital warts, chronic pelvic pain and bacterial prostatitis, and the complications of treatment of HIV infection and AIDS. He is the past President of the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases which amalgamated with the Association of Genitourinary Medicine and is now called the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV and the past Chairman of International Society for Sexually Transmitted Disease Research and past vice president of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology." Good. Cover has some wear and soiling.
