Original o primera edición
12mo. pp. 275, [1]. without the engraved frontis. portrait that is not present in all copies. An uncut copy in original bds., rebacked (soiled, corners worn, some foxing throughout). First American Edition of Rogers' 'Journals', with additions but 'Journals' condensed. One of the most valuable and fundamental works on the French and Indian War, tracing the campaigns and exploits of American frontier soldier, Robert Rogers. Rogers raised and commanded a force of militia known as Roger s Rangers, which acquired a formidable reputation for courage, daring and endurance in the campaigns around Lake George. The Journals are written in a clear and forceful manner and reproduce many of Rogers reports to his commanding officer as well as the orders he received. They begin with his scouting expedition to Crown Point, Sept. 24, 1755, and continue to Feb. 14, 1761 and his arrival in New York from Fort Pitt on the Ohio, including his mission under the orders of Sir Jeffrey Amherst to take possession of Detroit and several other French fur-trade posts on the Great Lakes and in the Ohio valley. Rogers also took part in Wolfe s expedition against Quebec, was responsible for the destruction of the Abenaki village of Saint-François-de-Sales deep in Canadian territory in 1759, and was present at the capitulation of Montreal in 1760. Rogers later fought against Pontiac in the uprising of 1763, and during the American Revolutionary War, raised the Loyalist regiment known as the Queen s Rangers, which, after his return to England in 1776, was commanded by John Graves Simcoe. He was also responsible for the initiation of Jonathan Carver s expedition in search of a north-west passage to the Pacific. His last years, unfortunately, were passed in England in a sordid state of debt, poverty and drunkenness. John Stark [1728-1822], whose memoir by Caleb Stark occupies pp. [169]-275, served as second-in-command to Rogers during the French and Indian War, taking part in the Battle of Lake George in 1755, the disastrous attack on Ticonderoga in 1758, and the Ticonderoga-Crown Point campaign in 1759. During The American Revolution he served as a major general in the Continental Army, participating in the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Canadian expedition, and in Washington's New Jersey campaign in the winter of 1776-77. His exemplary service at the Battle of Bennington in 1777 contributed to the surrender of Burgoyne's northern army at Saratoga, which marked a turning point in the war. This is the first printing of the major early printed source on Stark. Amicus cites 2 holdings in Canadian institutions, failing to record the TPL copy. Howes R-419. Sabin 72730. TPL 395. DCB IV pp. 679-83.
