Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. This is a 1973 German edition of "Amadis von Gallien", set forth before the public, posthumously, in 1508 by Catalan author Garci Ordóñez de Montalvo, from manuscripts that had been presumedly previously circulated in the 15th, 14th, or even 13th century; but it is in de Montvaldo's version, in which he claimed to have edited and corrected previous versions (now lost) that the world can first verify. ********** SYNOPSIS : In the story Garci Ordóñez (also known as Garci Rodríguez, circa 1450 - 1505) presents the knight hero as being a true hero : upright, honest, courageous, valiant, and handsome (of course!). The adventures that the heroic knight, Amadis, undergoes are fantastic; his feats of arms are almost god-like : he is the archetype of the hero. In between these exciting adventures, he woos Oriana, daughter of Lisuarte, a king of England. Amadis passionately loves Oriana - could any princess be wooed by a nobler knight? Eventually they are married. This story was immensely popular in its day, and amended versions, with added material , were to inspire Spanish explorers to look for the fabled California - first mentioned as a place in later versions of the tale (an island off the western coast of the New World). ********** This is a lovely edition, bound in supple soft olive-green leather, with gilt title against a red panel n the spine, surrounded by blind-stamped embellishments; a place keeper ribbon is sewn into the binding. The dust-jacket is handsomely decorated with a reproduction of an old wood cut. This edition of the book was published in 1973 by Insel-Verlag in Leipzig, Germany. The text was edited and translated by Fritz Rudolf Fries. / TRANSLATOR (from Catalan to German) : Fritz Rudolf Fries. / IMPRINT : Insel-Verlag. / PLACE : Leipzig. / DATE : 1973. / EDITION : First Edition ( Erste Auflage - so stated). / LANGUAGE : German. / SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Semi-flexible full leather binding. ********** Trade book; 765 pages; 4" x 6 3/4" (12mo); semi-flexible, soft leather binding (olive-green with gilt title against red panel on spine - the spine also has embellishments stamped in blind; front cover has title stamped in gilt; top edge dyed pale yellow. ********** CONDITION .
