Thumb-marking present. Notable creasing to gutter. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Light crushing to spine ends. Visible tanning to spine and edges. White marks to boards. Red mark to front board. Textblock is shaky.

Occasional light smudges, but otherwise, text clean and binding secure. A scarce account of Reconstruction in the postbellum South. The first chapter recounts the author's trip to the South in 1868 and gives his views on emancipated blacks.
