An abridged and reworked edition of the one of the Reeds' must popular histories, "Story of New Zealand," this adaptation was aimed at increasing popular appreciation of NZ's history up to 1950 and by 1957 it required four reprints.First published 1950, this reprint 1953. 184 pages, including index, b/w sketches of nine NZ towns or cities, e/paper maps lavishly captioned. Orange hard covers with gilt spine titles, VG, small inked name top corner FFEP verso, textblock otherswise excellent. Green/brown toned DJ has small section missing spine top extending on to front with 4cm by 2cm section missing, few small tears, chips.

A relaxed and informal history of the Otago area from its pre-European days to the late 1870s, by which time immigration had well established the European presence. The author was a well known NZ historian/publisher and to this particular work he appended a 27 page section by Anthony Trollope, "A Journey Through Otago in 1872." from his larger work "Australia and New Zealand" first published in 1874. 367 pages, including guide of Maori pronunciation and Maori word meanings, b/w sketches throughout, mainly by Pat Fenton, 12 maps, decorative e/papers. Red hard covers with black spine titles VG with slight edge/corner wear, Inked name FEP verso, also names/address top title page, which has small chip top edge near gutter, text block otherwise VG+.

James Stack's manuscripts of his life in early NZ, where he was born in 1835, were not found until 1930s. His record covers his father's missionary activities, his own travels in the northern North Island, encountering and observing warlike tribes, describing the people, the vast bush areas etc, to leave an invaluable account of NZ as it then was. First published in NZ in 1935, by OUP in 1937. 157 pages, colour frontis, e/paper maps and one other, some b/w sketches. The card covers and text block are VG, whited out name on FFEP. The price clippedt colour art DJ has some edgewear, tiny section missing spine top and lower and top of rear fold.
