Hardcover. Condición: Very good+ condition. Fifth edition. [viii], 883 pages of text, followed by [i] page of publisher's advertisement, [v] pages of index, and [xvi] pages of another index. Rebound in quarter brown leather with raised bands, date, and two leather labels on the spine. Brown cloth boards. The first four leaves were archivally washed and light bleached. The title page has minor discoloration and a few tiny chips. Two inscriptions on paper that were originally affixed to the inside of the front board were lifted and archivally affixed to the inside front cover of the new binding. One ownership inscription reads "George H. Smith Los Angeles July 9 1894" and is that of George Hugh Smith (1834-1915) who fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy, and eventually came to LA in 1869. He joined a law firm which partitioned land, and eventually bought land and developed it into what became the city of Orange. The other inscription is a fragment of a receipt, and reads ".charges, exchanges, + advance 75.Virginia Currency 7.7 [signed] B. W. Leigh, 1801." This is the autograph of Virginia politician Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781-1849). There is minor browning, and minor foxing scattered lightly throughout the text, and a few pages have small creases, tears, or stains, but the text is generally clean. This is a folio, measuring 16 inches (height). Title continues: Written in Latin by the Baron Puffendorf, Counsellor of State to his late Swedish Majesty, and the late King of Prussia. Done Into English by Basil Kennet. To Which is prefix'd Mr. Barbeyrac's Prefatory Discourse, Containing an Historical and Critical Account of the Science of Morality, and the Progress It has Made in the World, From the Earliest Times Down to the Publication of This Work. Done Into English by Mr. Carew. The fifth edition, desirable in that the pagination irregularities of former editions have been corrected. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Book.
