BOOK RESUME: Extract from introduction 'Before the invention of printing, drawings an illustration were regarded with mistrust as a means of conveying information. Due to the corruption which arose by the accumulation of errors inseparable from repeated copying by scribes who may always have fully understood the material they are transcribing. Illustrations were much more vulnerable to this process than words. It was for this reason that Ptolemy wrote his Geographia which is not a map, but a treatise giving precise and detailed instructions for the construction of a set of maps of the known world. It is divided into eight books, the first contains discussions of the principles of map making, and the state of knowledge at the time and concludes with directions for drawing a graticule of parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude on a simple conic projection and on a modified conic with curved meridians. Kl.-Oktav. Selten. - PROVENANCE: The book offered comes from the library of the world-famous Karl-Sudhoff-Institute for the History of Medicine (and Sciences) of the Leipzig University, which was dispersed by sale by the end of 2018. The institute was the first of its kind in the world when it was founded in 1906 and through its existence it gained much considerable relevance for the international emergence of a modern history of science and the source-based cultural studies. The institute was overseen by Karl Sudhoff, the most important historian of medicine of the 20th century, as was the annexed library that contained a high number of volumes sent (and sometimes even dedicated) to him personally. After Sudhoff's death in 1938 the institute was renamed to Karl-Sudhoff-Institut in honour of his achievements. All books from this library offered by us (about 2.500) were properly withdrawn from the Leipzig University Libraries holdings and bear corresponding marks (such as handwritten signatures on spines, stamps on titlepages or fly leaves). In general these were added to the volumes in a very careful manner and do not or only to a very small or neglectable degree affect the aesthetical appearance of the books. - Erste Ausgabe der lange Zeit mustergültigen Rezension Heibergs. In -folio, pp. (28), 511 (ma 482, mancano le ppp. 429-458, in questa copia sostituite con fogli bianchi), 2 tavole doppie, bella marca editoriale al colophon. Legatura in mezza pelle. These two woodcut maps are noteworthy for both their geocentrism and their novel constellation style. Whereas Dürer's maps, the first important printed single-sheet maps, showed the stellar universe as from the outside, Honter's were the first important printed [?] showing the stars as seen from earth. Other cartographers who quickly adopted Honter's point of view were Piccolomini and Postel [?] Honter dressed five of the male figures - Auriga, Bootes, Erichtoni, Perseus and Orion - in contemporary fashions, with belted tunics and flamboyant hats" (D. Warner, "The Sky Explored, Celestial Geography, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1979, pp. 123-26). Quest'esemplare è purtroppo scompleto, nel testo, delle pagine da 429 a 458.A first rare edition of the complete works of Ptolomaeus traslated into latin. This copy is enriched by the two woodcut plates by Johannes Honter: very rare, it's the first time these plans accompany a printed text: "These two woodcut maps are noteworthy for both their geocentrism and their novel constellation style. Whereas Dürer's maps, the first important printed single-sheet maps, showed the stellar universe as from the outside, Honter's were the first important printed [?] showing the stars as seen from earth. Warner, "The Sky Explored, Celestial Geography, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1979, pp. 123-26).This copy is unfortunately uncomplete in the text part, missing pp. 429-58.

First separate edition and first edition of Commandino's commentary of Ptolemy's Planisphaerium, the original Greek text of which is no longer extant. Octavo, two volumes bound into one in eighteenth century vellum, all edges speckled red, Aldine device on both titles and both final pages, woodcut initials, numerous woodcut diagrams. The Ptolemaei is printed in Roman type and the Planisphaerium in Italics; examples from the Aldine Press in Roman type are scarce as the press's founder, Aldus Manutius, invented the Italic type which he used almost exclusively. The Aldine press was also the first toÂissue printed books in the small octavo size. After Aldusâ death in 1515 the press was continued by his wife, Maria and her father, Andrea Torresani, until his son, Paulus Manutius (1512â "1574) assumed management in 1534. It is from this era that most, if not all, of the works from his press bear the imprint In Aedibus Haeredum Aldi et Andrea Asulani Soceri. In near fine condition with minor marginal dampstaining to a few pages. Exceptionally rare and desirable. Originally written in Ancient Greek, Ptolemy's 12th century Planisphaerium was one of the major scientific works that survived from antiquity in Arabic translation. An exploration of the mathematics of mapping figures inscribed in the celestial sphere, the Planisphaerium attracted interest because stereographic projection was the mathematical basis of the plane astrolabe, an instrument which was widely used in the medieval Islamic world. This Latin version, along with Jordanus de Nemore's work on the same topic, was first printed in Basel in 1536. The editor of the present volume, Federico Commandino, was a physician to the Duke of Urbino at his household in Rome, and the author of several translations of ancient Greek mathematical treatises and commentaries published in the early 16th century. In working with Ptolemy's stereographic projection of the celestial sphere on a plane with the south celestial pole at the center, Commandino noticed that conic sections could be considered sections in visual cones or perspective images. This inspired him to include in his work a study of perspective, which occupies the majority of his commentary and represents one of the earliest mathematical formulations of a method already widely employed by artists (Adams P2242; Censimento 16; CNCE 28281; Renouard 1558/4; Ahmanson-Murphy/UCLA 449; Houzeau & Lancaster 769; Honeyman 2557; Riccardi I, 360, 1).
