This selection of works by Oliver Goldsmith includes his novel The Vicar of Wakefield, two plays, and nearly thirty other poems A selection of works by Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, and poet Oliver Goldsmith, with a biographical introduction by Alfred Pollard. Described by contemporaries as a congenial but disorganised man, Oliver Goldsmith is best known for his late eighteenth century novel The Vicar of Wakefield, and his two plays, The Good Natur'd Man, and She Stoops to Conquer. All three of these works can be found in the present volume, alongside The Deserted Village, and several other miscellaneous poems. This copy belonged to British peer, architect, and town planner Lionel Brett. The bookplate of the fourth Viscount of Esher can be found to the front pastedown, with the Esher motto 'Vicimus'. Brett served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1966 to 1967. Small stamp from binders Bickers and Sons to the verso of the front endpaper. Ink inscription to the recto of the front free endpaper reads. 'Part of the Richards English Essay Prize, Eton 1930'. Quarter calf binding over red cloth boards. Externally, generally smart. Lightly rubbed to the boards, with a little wear to the extremities. Rubbed to the spine, with the some early signs of wear at the joints to the head and tail of the spine. Front and rear hinges starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound with bright and clean pages. Very Good. book.
