Beschreibung in der Platte: Avanzi degl' Aquedotti Neroniani, che si volevano distruggere per la loro vecciezza, ma per ordine di Nero. Sigre Papa Clemente XIV. sono restati in piedi Scala Santa. (Übersetzung: Reste der neronischen Aquädukte, die wegen ihrem Alter im Auftrag von Nero zerstört werden sollte. Papst Clemens XIV. erhielt die Heilige Treppe und sie blieb stehen). - 49 x 70 in hellbeigem Schrägschnitt-Passepartout 56 x 77. * Piranesi war ein berühmter italienischer Kupferstecher, Archäologe, Architekt und Architekturtheoretiker. "1743 bis 1747 hielt er sich meistens in Venedig auf, wobei er auch bei Giovanni Battista Tiepolo arbeitete. Schließlich kehrte er nach Rom zurück, wo er ein Geschäft an der Via del Corso eröffnete. In den Jahren 1748 bis 1774 schuf er weitere Folgen von Veduten barocker und antiker Baudenkmäler Roms, die Vedute di Roma, die - meist von hartem Sonnenlicht erhellt - eine eigentümlich monumentale Wirkung entfalten. Diese Veduten enthalten auch Bilderkompositionen in der Art des Capriccios. 1756 erforschte und vermaß Piranesi zahllose Bauten des antiken Rom. Folge war die Herausgabe der Ansichten römischer Altertümer in vier Bänden, die Antichità romane" (vgl. Wipedia). - Minimal lichtgebräunt, sonst gut erhalten.

De piramide staat aan de Via Ostiensis vlak bij de Porta San Paolo, aan de rand van Rome. De piramide werd in de Middeleeuwen "Meta Remi" genoemd. Ondanks de grote inscriptie met de naam Gaius Cestius dachten de Romeinen destijds dat dit de graftombe was van Remus, de tweelingbroer van de stichter van de stad Rome, Romulus. Waarschijnlijk was de piramide destijds zo overwoekerd met planten dat de inscriptie onleesbaar was.
