Madame Cottin also known as Sophie Ristaud Cottin was a French writer whose novels became extremely popular in the 19th century. Elizabeth or The Exiles of Siberia was originally published in 1806. it is a widely romantic novel that tells a moral tale. When published it was considered to be wild and outrageous. Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a French writer and botanist. He is best known for the novel Paul et Virginie published in 1788. This novel is considered a French classic. It is a story of love and friendship set during the French Revolution. Bound in a full calf binding. Generally smart. Missing the spine label. Rubbing to the boards, spine, and hinges resulting in loss. Age toning to the text block. Internally firmly bound. Spotting to the first and last pages but generally, pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Contemporary ink inscription on the title page. Very Good. book.

Both works have been translated from the original French into English. The first work to this volume is Elizabeth or the Exiles of Siberia. Elizabeth is a romantic historical novel by the novelist Sophie Cottin. Paul and Virginia is a novel following the title characters' journey from friendship to love. The author, Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a French writer and botanist. Both works have a frontispiece. In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine and to the board edges. Externally, very smart with a small amount of rubbing to the joint and to the extremities. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Bryan Hall. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with light scattered spots and the odd handling marks throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
