Sir Peter Beckford (1740-1811) writer and avid huntsman penned: Familiar letters from Italy, to a friend in England (2 vols., 1805), Thoughts upon hunting, in a series of familiar letters to a friend, 1781, Thoughts upon Hare and Fox Hunting, in a series of letters to a friend, 1781, and Thoughts on Fox Hunting, published 1791. Red cloth boards with black ruled borders and hunt cap/crossed whips on frt bd. Gilt fox mask and crossed whips/spurs and title on backstrip faded but remain legible. Corners bumped and rubbed but not unsightly. A very special presentation copy not signed by Beckford but signed on verso preface page by Lord Charles Bereford to Mr. Frank Gillard M.F.H. of the Belvoir Hunt, UK dated March 1880. Also, tidy inscription from former owner, past M.F.H. Dr. William J. Lay on fep. Beresford combined the two careers of the navy and being a member of parliament, making a reputation as a hero in battle and champion of the navy in the House of Commons. His family traced their ancestry to Englishmen who had invaded Ireland in the reign of James I and stayed to rule. The family estate covered 100,000 acres at Curraghmore near Waterford in South East Ireland, included stables for 100 horses and employed 600 people. The family enjoyed hunting, to the extent that his uncle was killed in a riding accident, his brother was crippled in another, and he himself managed ten broken bones at various times. 269 pp uncut edges. Hinges shaken but not split. Includes a fold-out kennel diagram along with a comprehensive list of hound names. Bound in the rear by the publisher is a separate 20pp booklet, A List of Works on English Sports and Pastimes, Including Angling, Cocking, Fencing, Hawking, Racing and Shooting Together With a Large Collection of Prints and Pictures Relating to the Same Subjects offered by James Toovey, Publisher. In a series of letters to a friend; in which are given ample directions for erecting a kennel, the management of hounds, and the duties and qualifications necessary for a huntsman and whipper-in. Laid in are several pages of contemporary biographies of Beresford & Gillard.
