Brilliant photographically illustrated edition of Fitzgerald's esteemed translation of the Rubaiyat, with ornamental page-borders and 28 photogravures on tissue by Adelaide Hanscom, pioneer in the use of photographs for the illustration of books. Adelaide Hanscom's marvelous photographs for the Rubaiyat are in keeping with the "pictorialist" tradition of photography. Hanscom achieved her luminous and visionary style through sophisticated techniques and her reputation was secured by her groundbreaking photographic illustrations for this 1905 Rubaiyat, one of the first American books to use photography for fine art illustration. Potter 258 Off-white buckram with colored lettering and deco With Illustrations from Life Studies by Adelaide Hanscom and Blanche Cumming. Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosophy, and, most notably, poet, who lived from 1048-1131. This beautiful book was translated into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald, who is considered the principal authority on Khayyam's poetry. Enhanced with twenty-eight exquisite double-mounted photos of watercolours of 'Persian life-studies', protected by glassine guards. Photos tipped-in to grey matt card which are likewise tipped-in to the parchment. Embossed Art Nouveau design & lettering to the front board depicts a grapevine."A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, a jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread and Thou." Headpieces adorn each page of the Fitzgerald text. Hanscom, one of the leading US women photographers of the era, used as her models Joaquin Miller, George Sterling & George James.
