First edition, first printing Near fine beige boards with light age toning in its original and at that time scandalous dust jackdet which quickly disappeared for its next printing. This fine full collage by Larry Rivers is the cover. Another plus is that it is edited by Donald Allen. Jacket is very good to near fine on the outside; reverse shows some age tone and a light wrinkle. From the private library of poet and editor of Origin Cid Corman with his signed bookplate. A strong association copy of the two contemporary poets, both residing at one time in the state of Massachusetts. This copy is clean and not marked with annotations, unusual for Cid Corman's personal books.

First edition. First printing. Earliest issue, with the suppressed Lary Rivers jacket. Inscribed by Ashbery to Philip Charron on the rear flyleaf, "In memory of our friend Frank," signed, dated 4/30/84; with additional holograph annotation by Charron below Ashbery's signature. Large octavo (26cm). Tan cloth, titles stamped in gilt on spine and front and rear covers; 586 pp. Some rubbing to cloth at base of spine; two clippings taped in by Charron, a few others laid in with additional correspondence; Charron's occasional ink checkmarks in text and ownership signature to front free endpaper - in all, a tight, Very Good or better copy. In the original dustwrapper, unclipped (priced $17.50 on front flap), a bit rubbed at crown of spine panel with some toning to lighter portions of extremities; Very Good or better. An interesting association. Charron was a contemporary of O'Hara's from Worcester and taught French at Deerfield Academy, where Ashbery had attended prior to Harvard. As Charron writes below Ashbery's inscription, the poet was in Deerfield to receive an award. Laid in among clippings are release forms from publisher Alfred A. Knopf requesting permission to reprint a portion of Philip Charron's diary in Brad Gooch's biography of O'Hara, City Poet; the passage was indeed included in Gooch's book, describing a scene at the at the funeral of Frank's father Russell, which Charron clearly attended: "'Kay looked in another world as she came in supported by Frank,' 19-year-old Phil Charron wrote in his diary that day. Very pitiful and poignant." A great copy of this monumental collection, in the preferred, now iconic dustwrapper; an excellent inscription and association with clear evidence of reading and use by a childhood friend of O'Hara's.
