Hardcover with Dust Jacket. First Edition. Large 8vo. Pp. viii, (2), 336. With three sections of plates. Bibliography of author's works. Index. Bound in full tan cloth with red lettering stamped on spine. In the dust jacket that shows modest rubbing, and slight chips to head of spine. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Inscription reads, "To -- --, with all good wishes from the author / [signed] H. H. Nininger". Inexplicably, for a book published in 1952, the same blue pen was used to write "1948" (subsequently stricken) at the top of that page. Nininger (1887-1986), a significant force in meteoritic studies, clashed publically with rival Lincoln La Paz of the University of New Mexico's Physics Department. At one point La Paz attempted to block publication of this very title. Ultimately, Nininger published 10 books and 140 papers. This volume includes a proposal for a national institute on meteoritics. Nininger died shortly after fulfilling his wish to witness the return of Halley's Comet.A handsome, well-preserved copy with the dust jacket now protected in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
