Originally published by Random House in hard covers in 1939. 12 Page introduction by Richard B. Gehman. The front cover has a light crease to the top right corner and some rubbing to the edges. Reading creasing to the spine which has chipping at the top and bottom and some rubbing along the edges. Light discolouration to the rear cover. There is a little browning to the top edges of the pages. Discolouration to the fore edges of the pages where the book has been damp at some time. The front cover has been pulled back from the text block leaving an unsightly strip exposed at the left side of the first page - the binding is secure however. Gift message in pen to the first page with two one inch stains affecting the first few pages. There is also a little warping to the pages in the second half of the book and the pages are browned. Originally published by Random House in hard covers in 1939. 12 Page introduction by Richard B. Gehman. The front cover has a only slight rubbing to the edges. The spine has a small surface chip, a small surface scrape to the left of the author's name and some light edge rubbing. There is a little whitening to the corners of the pages and a little brown spotting to the insides of the covers. Small price in pen to the first page with a light trace of a price in pencil and some yellow spotting towards the bottom. The pages are browned but otherwise unmarked. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid. During his years in Hollywood West wrote The Day of the Locust, a study of the fragility of illusion. Set in Hollywood during the Depression, the narrator, Tod Hackett, comes to California in the hope of a career as a painter for movie backdrops but soon joins the disenchanted second-rate actors, technicians, laborers and other characters living on the fringes of the movie industry. Tod tries to seduce Faye Greener; she is seventeen. Her protector is an old man named Homer Simpson. Tod finds work on a film called prophetically "The Burning of Los Angeles, " and the dark comic tale ends in an apocalyptic mob riot outside a Hollywood premiere, as the system runs out of control. Alvin Lustig was an American book designer, graphic designer and typeface designer. Lustig has been honored by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame for his significant contributions to American design. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
