Skyldfolk (=GUILTY PEOPLE), with photographs by Morten Andenæs, is divided into nine chapters, and follows a progression that loosely refers to the movement from an original question of guilt and the process through the courts. As alluded to in the title and in the book's theme, we are confronted with a narrative that deals with punishment, guilt and the limitations, responsibilities and expectations imposed on the individual in relation to family and society, and the violent impulses that may result from such restrictions. Family is understood not only as belonging through common interests or origins, but also as the result of the unique connections that are created between different parties. The gaze on, and the distance to, the photographed is pervasive; the reproductions are generally factual and seemingly neutral.
