Water-run between rear endpaper and paste-down, lightly affecting a few top margins of the last few pages of the publisher's catalogue. Binding a little stretched in a couple of places. Boards: light shelf-wear. Water-staining to rear board. Main decorative areas bright. 216 + ads.

Seventh Thousand, Original red cloth decorated boards, well used so the book has some background wear, corners rubbed, clean and tight, circular decoration to front gilt portrait of a young lad with curly hair, some background speckling making colour uneven, gilt lettering to spine, minor edge wear, blue endpapers, previous owner's inscription dated 1878, 241 pages, 7 listed illustrations - only 5 are present. The five illustrations are super. Someone in the past has removed the one that should be opposite page 37 and the one that should be opposite page 115. The frontispiece is still tissue protected and there is a small vignette on the title page, 6.75 x 4.75 inches approx. A very nice Victorian novel for those who enjoy Walter Crane.

Scarce first edition with 7 plates by Crane. 3 of these have been neatly hand coloured in water colours, in many ways enhancing rather than detracting from the book. No childish scribbles or grubbiness. 32pp catalogue for Oct. 1885 (first issue). Minor rubbing to head and tail of spine and inner joints tender but quite bright in the very attractive pictorial binding.

Light blue cloth boards are well worn, marked rubbed and chipped with some splitting to cloth to spine. Frontispiece with complete, although foxed, tissue guard. Only 2 of the other 6 b&w illustrations remain. There is a wonderful gift inscription to the ffep dedicated to Dorothy H Macandrew, daughter of Hunter Macandrew, and grand-daughter of James Macandrew, Dunedin ship-owner and politician. (1818-1897). Dorothy married Allan 'Norman' HAGGITT in 1923, and there is a signature of Virginia Haggitt also to the ffep. The book has obviously passed down through the family. A lovely piece of social history. 242 pages plus 7 pages of publisher's adverts . Mary Louisa Molesworth (1836-1921), author of beloved children's novel "The Tapestry Room," tells of a young girl's experiences finding magic and mystery in the ancient homestead of her ancestors, in "The Cuckoo Clock.".
