Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP). Once listed this will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The author, Frank McMullan, has written at least five other books focusing on aspects of the theater, and not one copy of any of any of his books for sale on the Internet is signed. The inscription is on the blank first front and paper. It reads: 'To Peggy Wise, with all best wishes, Frank McMullan.' You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They're in very good shape. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright. The edges and corners don't appear to have any wear at all. The spine ends look terrific. The book is square. The spine is straight. The binding of the pages is very good from cover to cover. The covers are nicely tight as well. The pages are exceptionally clean. I'm scrolling through and not finding any instances of soiling in the text (there's a little bit of amber discoloration at the juncture between the front inside cover and signed front end paper). The pages are also nicely bright. There is a light crease at the top corner of the signed first front end paper. I'm not seeing any other creasing anywhere in the book. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The first 214 pages are text. That's followed by a section titled Illustrations ( 'The following scenes from plays directed by Frank McMullan represent various uses of the directorial image in interpretation and production' ). Each scene description is followed by a full-page black-and-white illustration (they are all in excellent condition). A few of the plays are: Othello, Coriolanus; The Taming of the Shrew; Look Homeward Angel; Ah, Wilderness; Faust; The Tempest. The dust jacket took a few small hits protecting the covers. You can see the jacket in the first three photos. There are a couple of small losses off the top edge of the front cover, a little wear at both spine ends and just off the top edge of the rear cover. The flaps are in solid shape. They have a thin strip of toning at their margins (not the inside ones). They look clean. There aren't any tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. From the jacket: 'Frank McMullan received his theatre training at Yale University, where he studied with George Pierce Baker, Alexander Dean, and Allardyce Nicoll. For a number of years he has been head of the Directing Program in the Yale School of Drama and is now Associate Prof. of Play Production. In addition to teaching directing, he has stage scores of plays, new as well as classic, for the Yale University Theatre. He was the first of only two Americans to be invited to direct that the Shakespeare Memorial Theater, Stratford-on-Avon, England.' There are two quotes about the book on the rear flap from fellow theater directors: "This book is extremely valuable in that it sets forth a definition of what the function of a director should be. It points out how a director gets his ideas through analyzing the plays qualities. In my view it is a fine job of work." -- Richard Lewis-- and "The Directorial Image is a stimulating and practical approach to the understanding of a play and illustrates ways and means of transforming a director's interpretation into performance and production. It is unique in its field and should be of interest not only to stage directors but those involved in films and television."-- George Schaefer. Inscribed by Author(s).
