Disbound. Condición: Very good. Die geuerlicheiten, often referred to as simply Theuerdank, was written by Emperor Maximilian I, polished by his secretary, Melchior Pfintzing, and first printed in Augsburg in 1517 by Johann Schonsperger. Trimmed along the top edge to facilitate its original binding. The book's type was designed by Vinzenz Rockner, the emperor's court secretary, and the woodcuts approved by Maximilian himself, are the work of the great woodcut artists of the time. This literary epic was conceived by Emperor Maximilian (represented in the poem by the hero, Theuerdank,) to celebrate his heroic feats in overcoming the difficulties on his journey to win his bride, Mary of Burgundy (die Kunigin Ernreich in the poem). Maximilian was largely responsible for writing the poem and had made the first drafts in 1505-08. This leaf (8" x 13"), printed in 1519 by Johann Schonsperger, was from the second edition, which was a line-by-line reprint of the first. It features a woodcut by Leonhard Beck of Theuerdank striking the evil Burgundian Captain Fürwittig, who would be beheaded by the end of the tale. .

hardcover. Condición: very good. Densely worded Gothic type title page printed in red & black. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, and 117 finely printed large woodcuts (1 is hand-colored) by Leonhard Beck, Hans Burgkmair, Hans Schaufelein, et al., followed by 58 pages of text. Decorative initials and head/tailpieces throughout. Short folio, older vellum-backed boards (outer joint repaired, otherwise only lightly worn but with stain on rear cover). Augsburg: Mattaeo Schultes, [1679]. A very good clean copy of this scarce book. Originally printed in 1517, this work is an epic allegorical poem commissioned to celebrate the exploits and heroic feats of the Emperor Maximilian I (represented by Theuerdank) who overcomes the difficulties attending him on his journey for and with his bride Mary of Burgundy. It is assumed that Maximillian himself had a considerable share in the composition, and may have made the first drafts in 1508-08. The finishing and general editing was then undertaken by Maximilian's private secretary M. Pfuntzing.
