This is a first edition copy of "Drifting About" or what "Jeems Pipes of Pipesville Saw-And-Did," a satirical autobiography by Stephen C. Massett with many comical illustrations throughout the text by Mullen. In half morocco binding. Externally, a little worn. The joints and extremities are a little worn and the spine and boards are faded and marked. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown and an inscription to the front free endpaper. The front and rear hinges are starting the front remains firm but the rear is weak. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages with scattered spots throughout. Good. book.

This Englishman, San Francisco's first entertainer, visited California, via Panama, with the gold rush, arriving in 1849. He became an editor at the Marysville Herald, the second paper started in California. His travels took him to Hawaii, Australia, India, Europe, Turkey, etc. He describes Charles Dickens' first public reading, in London, April 15, 1858. His last visit to California was in 1859.
