Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 4th Edition. How a Plane made a Plane Samuil Marshak and Vladimir Lebedev, Young Guard 1931 Fourth edition. Octavo, slim illustrated paper wraps. 15pp.(Originally published in 1927 by Raduga publishing house, which was closed down by the Soviet authorities in 1930) All surviving editions are rare, most have gone through the hands of Soviet-era children. The 'plane' referred to is a carpenter's tool, which has grown old and assists in the making of a new plane with his friends, the saw, the mallet and the chisel. Lebedev [1891-1967] and Samuil Marshak [1887-1964] together created some of the most groundbreaking work in the field of Children's literature in the 1920s. Later, after the publishing house, Raduga was shut down by the authorities Lebedev was 'encouraged' to move his illustrative work in the direction of Soviet Realism. Marshak, a Jew continued to walk a political tightrope in the Soviet Union, but survived various purges.

Condición: Very good. Third printing of this avant-garde celebration of technological innovation by the celebrated pair of modernist children's book collaborators, Marshak and Lebedev. Children are taught about modernism and scientific progress through a comparison of tools of "yesterday" next to the tools of "today": the plume beside the typewriter, buckets for gathering well-water beside indoor plumbing, candles beside lightbulbs. Lebedev, ever experimenting, depicts the old methods with sketch-like drawings and the new methods with stencil-like designs. Scarce in any early printing, this is the same printing featured in Lévèque and Plantureux's Dictionnaire des illustrateurs de livres d'enfants Russes. 11.25'' x 8.75''. Original side-stapled pictorial wrappers printed in black, red, and blue. Illustrated by Lebedev in color throughout. [12] pages. Spine carefully repaired, light soiling and edgewear to wrappers.

Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Quarto 28.5x23 cm., original wrappers, (8) pp. 2d edition. 10000 copies. Illustrations by V. Lebedev. Vladimir Lebedev (1891-1967) was one of the most prolific book illustrators of the Russian avant-garde, in addition to his contributions in painting and graphic art. His international acclaim from children s book illustration caused Soviet authorities to levy threats against him for deviationism and the pressures of Socialist Realism caused his later work to be far more subdued, but the King of children s book illustration, his work in ROSTA and agitprop of the 1920s was a major success story for the Soviet artist. The present work is one of Lebedev s and Marshak s happiest collaborations. The subsequent printings after 1930 corrected the spelling (Myshonke) of the title. OCLC locates seven copies (NYPL, UCLA, Amherst, Princeton, Univ PA, San Jose PL) of this children s bedtime story published in the 1920s. This copy very good+.

Lebedev, Vladimir Vasil'evich Ilustrador. Small quarto. (12)pp. Bright color illustrations throughout. A rhyming Russian story for children, in which a worn-out old carpenter's plane makes a new plane, his "grandson," to carry on his work. The plane is aided in his work by fellow woodworking tools like the chisel, mallet, and saw. A collaborative work by writer, translator, and poet Samuil Marshak, and painter and graphic artist Vladimir Lebedev. The pair worked together frequently, and were important in the development of children's literature in Russia. In the 1920's, Lebedev became known as "King of the Children's Book," and Maxim Gorky said of Marshak that he was "the founder of Russia's (Soviet) children's literature." Marshak published under Raduga (Rainbow) from 1922 to 1930, while he worked in Leningrad as the head of the Children's Literature Studio. Stapled into self-wrappers, showing some wear at the spine and light staining. Near fine.

Condición: Fine. First edition of this simple yet dynamic instructional picture book, featuring a modernist approach to book design - a very fine copy. Marshak, a major children's book author and editor of the early 20th century, is best known today for his collaborations with the artist Lebedev and the publisher Raduga, of which this is a gorgeous example. Raduga led the innovations that characterized the Golden Age of Soviet Russian picture books, with an approach similar to Flammarion's Père Castor series in Paris - using avant-garde philosophies to make books designed to encourage interactive reading - but its influence spread well beyond the world of children's literature and into mainstream modernist art. The designer El Lissitzky believed that "It is in the area of children's books that we have accomplished most," asserting that "[h]ere we have found the form that corresponds to the content. The book is made active" (quoted in Hearn). An exceptional copy, the finest we have seen. 11'' x 8.25''. Original color pictorial wrappers printed in red, blue, grey, and black. Illustrated by Lebedev in color on every page. [12] pages.
