Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Poor. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Jacket sadly tatty, with edge wear, chipping and small loss to top and bottom of classic Gollancz jacket and spine, most of spine missing and jacket held together by new film wrapper, corners rubbed with small loss, some browning, offsetting and spotting to page block and endpapers, not price clipped (70s), no inscriptions, internally cleanish tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 526pp, illustrated. Ivan Donald Margary (1896-1976), was a historian who, during his lifetime, was the leading authority on Roman roads in Great Britain. Margary's primary gift to the study of Roman roads was the development of a catalogue system known as Margary numbers, numbering Roman roads so that they could be referred to by catalogue number with no sign of confusion, and to allow cross referencing of the same road between different studies and authors. In later life he financed the excavation of Fishbourne Roman Palace, near Chichester in West Sussex. The Viatores, a group of field workers and researchers under the direction of Ivan Margary, found so many new minor Roman roads that they soon had to start using letter suffixes to discriminate between the huge number of different roads they discovered (and documented in this book). This is their seminal study on the Roman Roads of S. E. England. Quite a scarce book.
