One card has a tiki thereon whilst the other contains a representation of a Maori pa, tiki mere, and two other designs [ . . .]" - from the newspaper clipping, "A Memory of General Robley". Contents: Introduction; Concerning Pounamu; Working Pounamu; Greenstone Implements; Concerning War-Clubs; Greenstone Ornaments; Hei-Tiki; Glossary Of Maori Words; Index. "This little book is an endeavour to set down the results of careful investigations extending over many years on the subject of pounamu or New Zealand greenstone, and the special uses to which it was applied by the Maori. [. . .] Ever since the Pakeha, the first European visitors to New Zealand, regained their ship there has been much carrying away of examples of old Maori craftsmanship, and those in greenstone have always had a special attraction for collectors. So many specimens of worked pounamu, indeed, have been brought to the British Isles since Captain Cook's return to England in 1771, that the silver streak might almost be called te wai pounamu. The old worked greenstone now sees no more wars, but it is still the object of the rivalry of collectors, who value itm as its former possessors had done, for its beauty and rarity, and for the strange and interesting forms into which it has been wrought." - from the author's Introduction. By the author of "Moko" (1896). [Bibliographical reference: Bagnall R856 - "Robley's observations from New Zealand with reproductions of his drawings to amplify interpretation."].

Condición: Very good plus. First edition of this classic study of Maori tattooing, profusely illustrated with photographs and Robley's own drawings. Robley, an amateur artist with a deep interest in Maori culture, had a genuine passion for recording the intricate designs, techniques, and history of the intricate art of tÄ moko; he was also a soldier and, notoriously, a collector of mokomakai: preserved, tattooed human heads, sought after and debased as objects of commerce and display by European and American collectors and museums alike. Robley's meticulous illustrations, photographs, and descriptions have become an invaluable resource for historians and revivalists of traditional Maori arts, preserving unique images of an art form and cultural practice that, at the very same time, imperialistic forces were beginning to efface. An indispensable study. 11" x 9" Original gilt-stamped brown cloth boards, with decoration stamped in black. Black endpapers. Illustrated with 180 plates and frontispiece. [22], 216 pages. Mild edgewear and scuffing to boards at extremities. Spine lightly sunned. Light foxing, primarily to title page and surrounding leaves. Hinges sound.
