Work is based on poems by Paul Eluard, Nicolas Guillen, Horace, M. Lukenin, Gabriela Mistral, Vitêzlav Nezval, Tu Fu. Illustrated with 9 original full-page blockprints by Anton Refregier. The blockprints were produced over a period of ten years - 1950 to 1959. They were originally designed for use as New Year's greetings to friends. Staining, scuffing and some age wear on binding. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. Tight copy with binding in fair, interior in very good condition. Translated, adapted and arranged by Walter Lowenfels. The title "Song of Peace" and the verses which form the refrain of Section 1 are from a poem by Vitêzlav Nezval. The originals of the other poems are as follows: 1) From the Sioux. 2) Don't let Clouds Kill Others, Nazim Hikmet. 3) Prologue from an Unfinished Elegy, Nicolas Guillen. 4) A Soldier's Love Letters, from poems by Tu Fu, Li Ling, and Su Wu. 5) The African Lion, Horace - Book III, Ode II. 6) Our Divine Mother, Gabriela Mistral. 7) My Friends, M. Lukenin. 8) Lechayim, Itzik Fefer (Some poems adapted from translations). "Peace" (Section 3) by Paul Eluard. "Coda" (Section 1) is an original sonnet by Walter Lowenfels. Anton Refregier (1905-1979) was a Russian immigrant painter in the United States. Walter Lowenfels (1897-1976) was an American poet and journalist. He also was the editor of the communist newspaper "The Daily Worker.".
