First American Edition and First Photoplay Edition with half-title for the UFA production. Novel based on the classic Fritz Lang directed black and white silent film of the same title, starring Gerda Maurus and Willy Fritsch. Lang of course was one of the great innovators of the movie industry, having directed perhaps one of the most important expressionistic films, Metropolis, also written by Von Harbou. Published as part of World Wide's triple deck series, with this title under the heading "Adventure". Bound with two other filmed titles, The Spoilers by Rex Beach with half-title for the Paramount talking-picture starring George Bancroft and Slightly Scarlet by Percy Heath, with half-title for the all-talking Paramount picture starring Clive Brook. Very Good tight copy with paper yellowing as usual for this publisher in Very Good plus dustjacket, with only a few very light drip spots at spine. An overall bright copy of this very scarce Fritz Lang title.

Vintage borderless reference photograph of Fritz Lang being attacked by the shackled Paul Hubschmid, rehearsing a scene on the set of the 1959 film. German mimeo snipe and "Der Tiger von Eschnapur" stamps on verso. Based on the 1918 German novel "Das Indische Grabmal" ("The Indian Tomb") by Thea von Harbou. Previously filmed in 1921 as the silent film "The Indian Tomb," directed by Joe May and starring Conrad Veidt and Mia May, with a screenplay written by von Harbou and Lang (who was originally slated to direct), and in 1938 as the German film "Der Tiger von Eschnapur," directed by Richard Eichberg, starring Philip Dorn and La Jana. Lang returned to the material some forty years later, and divided the story into two films to avoid the lengthy three and a half hour running time of the original silent film. A German architect travels to the remote Indian city of Eschnapur to oversee work being done at the behest of the Maharajah, and falls in love with a beautiful temple dancer, who the Maharajah also loves. Set in India, shot on location in Berlin, Germany and Udaipur, India. 9 x 7 inches. Near Fine. Eureka 50047. Rosenbaum 1000.

Vintage Austrian program for the 1931 German film. Lang's first sound film, Peter Lorre's breakthrough role, and the film Lang considered to be his masterpiece-an assertion that has found much agreement since. The only second piece of ephemera from the film we have ever offered. Text in German. Issue No. 262 of "Illustrierter Film-Kurier," one of the oldest European film magazines, which ran weekly from 1929 to 1956. Like its German counterpart, "Film-Kurier," each issue focused on a single film and used a gravure process to reproduce images from the film, making for striking images and design. 6 x 9 inches. Six pages, saddle stapled. Ink annotations throughout, seemingly regarding layout, affecting a bit of text but no images. Very Good plus with a faint horizontal crease and light toning to the wrappers. Criterion Collection 30. Grant Germany. Godard, Histoires de cinema. Ebert I. Eureka Masters of Cinema 9. A highly influential pre-war film noir and masterpiece of world cinema, ranking among the best of Lang's body of work. In addition to being Lang's first sound film, 'M' also served as the vehicle for Peter Lorre's breakout role as child murderer Hans Beckert. The program is chiefly illustrated throughout with a series of photo-montages, and gives the date of the premiere as 3 September, 1931. A rare premiere program for one of Lang's most enduring films.

Light wear along the spine-fold, some oxidation to staples, with a few faint (partial) horizontal creases at center; contents are fresh; Very Good+ or better. Original program for Lang's final silent film, starring Klaus Pohl, Willy Fritsch, and Gerda Maurus. Based on the novel by Lang's wife, Thea Von Harbou, Frau Im Mond is considered one of the first serious science fiction films. The groundbreaking film presented the basics of rocket travel to a mass-audience for the first time, and marks the first occurrence of the "countdown to zero" prior to a rocket launch. The program is richly illustrated with photographic stills from the film, with a cast of characters and synopsis printed throughout. OCLC notes a single separate holding for the program at the Bauhaus-Universitat Weimar, though longer runs of Illustrierter Film-Kurier are more broadly held.

Original German programs for duology "Die Nibelungen," one each for "Die Nibelungen: Siegfried" and "Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge." Based on the thirteenth century epic poem "Nibelungenlied." Text in German. Film-Kurier was the first German film journal, published daily beginning in 1919. Film-Kurier's classic era lasted until 1933, when its publisher, Alfred Weiner, had to flee Germany because of his Jewish origins. The issues from this era remain striking to this day because they were printed using a gravure reproduction process. Each day's issue would focus on a single film. 9 x 11.75 inches. Each program six pages, folded loose leaves as issued. Very Good plus, with a horizontal fold, tiny pinholes to the corners, and an occasional short closed tear. Masters of Cinema 46.

First Edition. First Edition, preceding all others, including the movie tie-in edition, published later the same year by Scherl. This copy with an alternate jacket-differing completely with the one referenced in Rössler's "Filmfieber." Rare in dust jacket. Basis for the German silent film classic by Fritz Lang, with a screenplay adapted by von Harbou from her novel. Released in the US as "Woman in the Moon." Like "Metropolis," a novel that was conceived and executed simultaneously with the film. It is also generally recognized as the first serious film to portray space travel (preceded by Georges Melies' equally important but more comic 1902 silent, "La voyage dans la lune"). It was the first film to introduce the basics of rocket travel to a mass audience, including the use of a multi-stage rocket, and was the first instance in a film of a "countdown to zero" being used prior to a rocket launch. Jacket design by S.B. Singer, with his motif on the front panel artwork. Near Fine, with no rubbing to the gilt, only some scattered foxing and a tiny splash to the otherwise bright yellow topstain, and with gold cloth ribbon bookmark intact, in a Very Good plus dust jacket, with minor wear at the corner, a bit of even toning to the spine panel, and light fray at the crown. A very attractive copy. Rössler, Filmfieber, p. 117.

Signed limited edition, number 40 of 100 copies signed by both Lang and von Harbou and bound in silk, issued as a souvenir of the world premiere of the film Metropolis on 10 January 1927. Original bright red textured silk, gilt titles and decoration to spine and front board, cream endpapers, top edge gilt, cream silk bookmark. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco red cloth solander box. A remarkably fine copy of a fragile production. The soft silk binding is very prone to wear and tarnishing, but this example is uncommonly fresh with only a hint of rubbing to the spine, two isolated spots of wear to the lower corners of each cover. The limitation page specifies that this was produced for the premiere held at Ufa-Palast am Zoo, a grand occasion to which only the most important people, such as Chancellor Wilhelm Marx, Foreign Minister Gustav Stresemann, the minister of defence Otto Gessler, and the President of the Reichsbank Hjalmar Schacht, as well as critics of leading newspapers, were invited. There was a parallel screening, at Ufa-Pavillon am Nollendorfplatz, for critics of lesser importance and the general public. The text chosen for this deluxe issue is the second printing (seventh to eleventh thousand); the first printing in book form was issued in advance of the film. It contains the full text, not the cheap abridgement issued the same year. The novel was based on the original screenplay written in 1924 by Thea von Harbou and her husband, the director Fritz Lang. The work was conceived and written with the intention of being adapted for the screen; it was first serialized in the magazine Illustriertes Blatt in 1925, accompanied by promotional screenshots from the upcoming film. The subsequent film is a classic both of German expressionism and of silent-era science fiction. It remains the most expensive silent film ever made, costing approximately 5 million Reichsmark. Despite advances in film-making technology, no other film has surpassed Metropolis in terms of its impact on production design.
