First edition, one of 160 copies, folio (71 x 54 cm), half-title, title, 52 ff; 23 mezzotint plates, including engraved title, of which 19 coloured, of which 1 double page; in addition 9 illustrations printed to text, of which 2 coloured, a little spotting and foxing, handsome modern red half morocco gilt, an attractive example. The first scholarly work by the historian and archaeoloist Alexandre, comte de Laborde (1773-1842). Magnificently illustrated, this work uses the three-colour mezzotint process developed in the mid 1730's by the German painter and engraver Jacob Christoph Le Blon (1667-1741). In 1797, following service as an officer in the Austrian army and an extended tour through Europe, Laborde returned to France. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Talleyrand and became a protégé of Lucien Bonaparte, whom he escorted on numerous diplomatic trips to Madrid. During these trips, Laborde developed a keen interest in Spain and its history and with the aid of several artists he collected a significant amount of material which later formed the basis of Voyage pittoresque et historique de l'Espagne (1807-1818), and Itineraire de l'Espagne (1809), a journey which he undertook together with his friend Chateaubriand. The volumes became such a drain on his private income that he was forced to accept an administrative post in the Empire in order to continue work on them. This his first work describes Italica, the Roman town close to Seville, the hometown of the Roman Emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Theodosius. Laborde offers new details on the Roman circus, the representation of the Muses and most importantly, 'on mosaics, which had not been reproduced on paper yet'.

No Binding. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. elephant folio (570mm x 440mm), engraved frontispiece showing a View of Tarragona taken on the Road to Barcelona, large engraved vignette title page, 72 pages of text, with 83 other finely engraved plates on 67 leaves, showing wonderful views, plans & architectural details of towns, villages and famous buildings in Catalonia, Spain. Three plates with closed tears (see full listing of plates below for more details), but plates overall are very good clean rich impressions, the upper board cover only is present but detached. Overall a wonderful collection of plates on Catalonia from one of the most famous and sought after illustrated works on Spain. One of the most famous illustrated works on Spain beautifully illustrated with magnificent engraved views, etc., by Alexandre Louis Joseph Laborde (1774-1842). The author describes monuments from the Roman civilization, continues with Arab sites from the Middle Ages, and at the end he pays attention to the present. There is an extensive historical explanation and each plate is accompanied with a short explanatory text. Comte Alexandre Louis Joseph de Laborde (1774-1842) was a French antiquary, liberal politician and writer, a member of the Academie des Sciences morales et politiques (1832) under the rubric political economy. Born in Paris, Laborde was the fourth son of the famous banker of Spanish extraction, Jean-Joseph de Laborde, who was guillotined during the Reign of Terror. Young Laborde had been dispatched to Vienna by his father at the outbreak of the French Revolution; there he joined the Austrian army, in which he was named an officer, 10 December 1789, at the age of seventeen, by personal intervention of the Emperor Joseph II. After having served the Emperor Joseph II in Vienna, and having distinguished himself in the Imperial Army, Alexandre Laborde returned to his fatherland and started to develop a taste for the arts. He travelled to the United Kingdom, Holland, Italy and Spain. His travels and his studies earned him a special place in the world of archeology and literature. Spain made a great, wonderful, and mysterious impression on him where he found the remains of Roman civilization, and of two peoples and religions, the Arabs and the Spaniards. He was part of Lucien Bonaparte's embassy in 1800 and 1801, and his intimate relations with the minister provided him the means to achieve his goal. He travelled around the country with several artists, himself drawing what he thought were the most interesting sights. All of this resulted in the publication of Itinéraire de l'Espagne, followed by the present Voyage pittoresque et historique en Espagne. He was named to the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres 21 March 1816, in the reorganization of the Institut de France. From 1818 to 1824, he served in the National Assembly, where he opposed the reinstallation of Ferdinand VII to the throne of Spain at the time of Trocadero (1823), with the eventual result that he found the leisure for a four-year tour of Italy, Greece, Turkey, Palestine and Egypt in the company of his son Leon de Laborde. He served as Député and as Préfet of the Seine (1830), and as a supporter of Louis-Philippe in the Revolution of 1830 as a general Garde nationale and aide-de-camp of the king, who sent him to Spain as ambassador. From 1831 to 1837 he served as Deputy for the Seine, in 1837 as Deputy for Seine-et-Oise. He died at Paris in 1842. The engravings of Catalonia include fine views in and around Barcelona; Tarragona; Mont-Serrat; Girona; Olerdola; Lerida; Amposta, etc. A full list of plates is available on request.

Couverture rigide. Condición: Très bon. Rare first edition of this superb work of which only 160 copies were printed. Vicaire, Manuel de l?amateur, IV, 741; Graesse, Trésor de livres rares, IV, 59; Brunet, III, 714; Cicognara 3960: « edizione di massimo lusso »; Monglond V, 1124-1125; Palau 128972. "Published at 200 fr.; this work has been, according to ?La France littéraire? by Quérard, printed in a limited edition of 160 copies? (Vicaire). The mosaic mentioned on the title (of about 13 x 9 meters) was discovered on December 12, 1799 in Italica (today the city of Santiponza near Seville), and Laborde hurried to publish his work, sumptuously printed by Didot, before getting involved in the publication of the Voyage d?Espagne. "The description of this mosaic was supposed to be part of a picturesque travel in Spain, and to be published only in a year; but the information it gives to Antiquity lovers on several interesting points have induced me to make it a special book, and therefore more detailed The pavement described here is the most considerable ever found? (introduction). When this mosaic was discovered, the major part of the race chariot pictured in its central part was missing, but the superb and highly elaborate frame picturing muses and other figures in medallions was almost intact. This work is essential for the knowledge and the iconographic study of this large Roman mosaic found within Italica?s circus. The superb illustration is composed of 9 engravings in the text, 1 frontispiece and 22 plates, most of them by J. Marchand after the author?s drawings. 18 of them, including one on double-page, are aquatints printed in color and enhanced by hand with watercolor, and 4 plates are in black. « Edizione di massimo lusso » (Cicognara 3960). Very beautiful copy of this rare work sumptuously illustrated in color, preserved in its rich contemporary signed binding in decorated Russian leather.
