9.75 x 8 inches. Text in Hungarian, with a laid-in translation on a folded sheet. 108 pages, with folding list of plates at end. 100 black-and-white photographs, including two photos printed on a translucent blue sheet. Original black boards lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket. Of the original edition of this classic, Parr & Badger wrote: "In 1968 the photographer György L rinczy took advantage of the Hungarian government's decision to relax its rigorous laws on citizens travelling abroad. The result was his book New York, New York, which projected a rather less jaundiced view of the Big Apple than that of many home-grown photographers. As a foreigner's vision, and in terms of photographic outlook, L rinczy's perspective clearly has affinities with that of William Klein, but his manic exuberance seems to run on pure energy, without the psychological tensions that underpin Klein's more realistic and informed vision of the city . György's Style is rough, raw and uninhibited, in the best stream-of-consciousness manner, utilizing extreme blur, grain and solarisation. his manic exuberance seems to run on pure energy, without the psychological tensions that underpin [William] Klein's more realistic and informed vision of the city" (Parr & Badger, The Photobook, I, pp. 233 and 262). Fernández and Guerrero, New York in Photobooks, p. 148 ("A printed pattern of visual pleasure"). A fine, well-preserved copy One of 1000 copies, a facsimile reprint of the 1972 edition.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 108 pages, hardcover with dust jacket, 10" by 8.25". Text in English. Limited edition of 1,000. Remarkable book by Hungarian photographer Gyorgy Lorinczy, a facsimile edition of the very rare first edition, published in 1972. Brilliantly conceived and sequenced to evoke the tenor of early 70's New York - late hippie culture, pollution, performance art, Warhol and Ginsberg, street hustlers, protests - with many of the images carrying a distorted, experimental aspect, including some solarizations. An incredible book. Scarce. In excellent condition save for some light rubbing to tips and light scratches and rubbing to back panel of dj.

First edition. In the original dust jacket. (132) p. (two tracing paper leaves and one folding leaf are included). â In 1968 the photographer György LÅ rinczy took advantage of the Hungarian government's decision to relax its rigorous laws on citizens travelling abroad. The result was his book New York, New York, which projected a rather less jaundiced view of the Big Apple than that of many home-grown photographers. As a foreigner's vision, and in terms of photographic outlook, LÅ rinczy's perspective clearly has affinities with that of William Klein, but his manic exuberance seems to run on pure energy, without the psychological tensions that underpin Klein's more realistic and informed vision of the city. It seems unlikely that LÅ rinczy saw the work of any of the Japanese photographers of the day, but his book has a similar 'anything goes' feeling, akin to the totally spontaneous style of someone like Daido Moriyama, who coincidentally, was photographing in New York around the same time. LÅ rinczy's style is rough, raw and uninhibited, in the best stream-of-consciousness manner. But he has nevertheless thought about New York, New York as a book, not only laying it out in a dynamic cinematic style, but employing such devices as printing one or two pages on tracing paper, or utilizing extreme grain, blur and even solarization. The later, surprisingly, renders his depiction of the city's energies more rather hallucinatory feeling that LÅ rinczy seems to have experienced on encountering this most vibrant of cities. LÅ rinczy clearly had a whale of a time in the headquarters of consumer capitalism, catching up on the 1960s and tasting some of its forbidden fruits, such as rock bands and experimental theatre groups. This excited, carefree, though not naive view of New York makes a refreshing change from the inbred cynicism of the streetwise native". (Parr-Badger: The Photobook. Phaidon, 2004.) . Scores to the dust jacket at rear panel.

Published to the specifications of the original edition, and bringing to light a scarce and previously unavailable book that immediately skyrockets into the canon of 20th century photo literature. Some of Lorinczy`s images - the shot of Radio City for example - are instantly iconic. The book is a series of experimental images of the hippie culture, performances, sinuous highways, skyscrapers and street scenes. The sequence of the images, with solarizations, distortions and extreme black and white contrast make the spirit of the 60s tangible.***************Magyar Helikon, Budapest. 1972. Erstausgabe.
