Wiki notes: "Kostof's approach to architectural history emphasized urbanism as well as architecture and showed how architectural works are embedded in their physical and social contexts. Commonly accepted today, Kostof's approach was a break with previous directions in architectural history which tended to emphasize the sequence of styles and to study architectural works in relative isolation from their settings. Kostof's textbook, A History of Architecture: Settings and Rituals (1985) embodied these ideas and soon became one of the standard texts in the field. In 1987, Kostof hosted a five-part PBS series, America by Design. Kostof's publications were wide-ranging and included The Architect: Chapters in the History of the Profession; The City Shaped: Urban Patterns and Meanings Through History; America by Design; and The City Assembled: Elements of Urban Form through History. In 1993, following his death, the Society of Architectural Historians established the "Spiro Kostof Award", to recognize books "in the spirit of Kostof's writings," particularly those that are interdisciplinary and whose content focuses on urban development, the history of urban form, and/or the architecture of the built environment.

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in a near fine, very slightly edge-nicked and dust-dulled dust wrapper, now mylar-sleeved. Remains particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and sharp-cornered. Edition; 1st pbk. ed. Physical description; 320 pages : illustrations (some color), facsimiles, maps, plans ; 26 cm. Notes; Includes bibliographical references (p311-313) and index. Contents; The city edge; urban divisions; public places; the street; urban process; process against conservation - the life of urban form. Summary; Spiro Kostof, the renowned architectural historian and chronicler of urban form, presents a universal history of the elements of cities: streets, public places, urban divisions, and the borders of city and countryside. This is both an independent study and a companion volume to Professor Kostof's book "The City Shaped" which dealt with cities as complete entities. Now he follows the evolution of their components, and traces the story right up to the present, showing how the issues remain fresh and engage with our own day, often in unexpected ways. He also discusses "urban process": the effect on cities of natural disasters (such as the Great Fire of London and the Lisbon earthquake), war and comprehensive redevelopment, compared with traditional patterns of incremental growth and change. This is at once an exercise in architectural and social history, a case-study for the present, and a pointer for the future. Subjects; Cities and towns - History. Architecture - History. City and town life. City planning. Cities and towns - Growth. City and town life - History. Public spaces - History. City planning - History. Cities and towns - Planning. Cities and towns - Environment planning. Urban Architecture. Cities. Urban Development. History. Architecture and Town Planning. Cities - Environment planning - History Towns and cities - History and development. Civic art and town planning. City & town planning - architectural aspects. Soft Covers. Condición: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Plans, Drawings, Maps Ilustrador. Second Revised. This impressive and extremely detailed history of the development of architecture from ancient to contemporary times was initially published in 1985 with this card cover reprint in 1995. The Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians hailed the publication by saying "The scope of the book is astonishing." This sentiment will be mirrored by those with a deep professional or lay interest in the subject. Kostof was revising and updating his massive work when he died late in 1991. His research assistant Greg Castillo was appointed to complete that work. The book is divided into three major parts, chronologically based, with 29 chapters. 792 pages including credits, glossary and index, 34 colour photograph section, b/w photos, plans. drawings, maps throughout. Colour pictorial card covers few light creases at corners, small, unobtrusive burn or liquid mark at front centre left, this has transferred a small brown mark front cover verso and half title. Ink gift inscription in juvernile print top front cover verso, text block otherwise excellent. Book weight unpacked 2.1 kgs, probably requiring additional postage.
