Hardcover. Condición: Good. Limited Edition. Letters on the American Revolution in the Library at Karolfred - Frederic R. Kirkland, two volumes, privately printed, limited editions, red covers, no jackets. The first volume by Allen, Lane & Sons, Philadelphia, 1941, 94 pp, with 5 full page facsimiles, was limited to 200 copies with this one numbered 135 of 200. Vol. II. Coward McCann, NY, 1952, 128 pp, with four full page facsimiles, limited to 500 copies. The limitation page has not been numbered. Kirkland expanded the first edition with a larger volume 11 years later and increased the production from 200 to 500 copies. The 1952 volume is marked as Vol II. The 1941 edition is not marked as Vol.1, there being no plan for a second. The author references it as Vol 1 in his second book and most collectors will similarly refer to the 1941 edition as Vol. 1. The two are printed in similar styles and covers but from two different companies. The two volumes are difficult to find as a pair given the difference in runs. They make for a nice reference set for collectors of Rev. War era autographs. These are Kirkland s presentation of his collection of Revolution era autographs. Each letter is fully transcribed and includes nicely researched context and reference to any names mentioned in the letter. Kirkland was a long-time officer of the Manuscript Society. His collection was sold at auction by Parke-Bernet Galleries in March, 1962. Vol. 1 shows wear at the top spine and corners of the cover, otherwise a clean, tight copy. Vol II has a cleaner cover, similarly clean, tight copy with a prior owners stamp on the inside cover.
