Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. "Junius. Stat nominis umbra" by Junius ( attributed to Sir Phllip Francis ) T. Bensley, London - 1805 new edition - 284p, 18cmx15cm - with engraved frontispiece and plates - Vol II - condition: good, with leather boards and spine, with rubbing and wear, engraved plates and frontispiece, The letters of "Junius," originally appearing in the "Public Advertiser" from November of 1768 to January of 1772, represent one of the great mysteries of English literature. No author ever claimed credit for these letters, though they were ascribed to every prominent Whig of the period. Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818), who was a clerk in the War Office when the "Junius" letters were written, is generally considered to be the mystery writer, though he denied this association to the end of his life.

Ottimo esemplare a fogli chiusi. Rothschild I, p. 327: Though for many years the authorship of these critical political letters was disputed, it is now generally accepted to be the work of Sir Philip Francis (1740-1818). Francis was well placed in British government circles having risen through a number of promotions to a principal clerkship in the War Office. The Letters written under the name of Junius began appearing in periodicals in 1769 and ran through 1772. Having to do mostly with the Wilkes case, a cause celebre of the day, they caused quite a stir because it was evident that the writer was intimately familiar with privy information. Almost everyone of note became suspect and in fact it is only recently that the experts have tentatively agreed upon Francis as the author. Cfr. Cordasco, A Bibliography of the Letters of Junius, passim; Alvar Ellegård, Who was Junius?, Stockholm, 1962; Linde Katritzky, Johnson and The Letters of Junius; New Perspectives on an Old Enigma, New York, 1996.

Hard Cover. Condición: Poor. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket. New Edition. First Printing. Publisher's full leather. This is a later edition (1786) of the collected letters of "Junius," first published in 1772. "Junius' poured brilliantly slanderous invective upon Tory-minded English ministers, especially the Duke of Grafton, for a series of inconsistent measures which allegedly ruined England and drove the colonies 'into excesses little short of rebellion.' Vehement, lucid, frequently reprinted in English and colonial newspapers, the letters were polemical masterpieces with such extraordinary knowledge and appreciation of contemporary colonial opinion that they lent moral support to the early revolutionary cause. 'Junius' opposed the Tea Duty, but upheld the legality of the Stamp Act, and prophesied (Dec. 19, 1769) that the colonies aimed at independence" - Dictionary of American History. . Upper board missing, spine cracked, some foxing. Reading/binding copy only. POOR. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall. 394 pp.
