Descripción: James osgood, boston, 1873. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Near Fine. No Jacket. The novel was originally serialized from March 1869 through June 1870 in Pierre-Jules Hetzel's periodical, the Magasin d'Éducation et de Récréation. The deluxe illustrated edition, published by Hetzel in November 1871, included 111 illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Édouard Riou.[1] The book was highly acclaimed when released and still is now; it is regarded as one of the premiere adventure novels and one of Verne's greatest works, along with Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. The description of Nemo's ship, called the Nautilus, was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Thus, the book has been able to age well because of its scientific theories, unlike some of Verne's other works, like Journey to the Center of the Earth, which are not scientifically accurate and serve more simply as adventure novels. This is the very rare true all original American first and one of a handful that remains to this day. In green boards with gilt inlays and brown end papers this has the publisher Osgood on the spine and "the End" as the last words. A better copy than what is usually found which makes this one of the rarest of the rare. Nº de ref. de la librería 1000004517

Descripción: Sampson Low, Marston, Low & Searle, 1873. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. 1st Edition. Extremely scarce 1873 First edition, First printing The 1873 dated Sampson Low editions scarcity is such that few copies ever even become available for sale, and the few that do are priced into the 5 figures. The 1873 Sampson Low edition of Around The World In Eighty Days is far more scarce than the 1873 Osgood edition of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Seas. This book has beautiful green beveled boards with unfaded gilt titles to the front and spine, and a full gilt page block on all sides. The book is has benefited from being rebacked with the original cloth lay back down thus making the binding tight and square and the book very readable and not fragile as otherwise is typcial of Verne books. The scarce original end papers are present with ownership names to the front end paper (see images), with one being crossed out. The internal pages are all present and remarkably clean for a Verne book with only about a dozen pages with very faded foxing and with a about 3 pages with penciled notes, otherwise the pages are clean and bright with no bent pages, no stains, no foxing, no stains and no tears. Lacking tissue guard. Please see many detailed images. Beautiful scarce, highly collectible, important Verne book in stunning green boards with bright unfaded gilt. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for additional Verne listings and other Sci-Fi/Fantasy titles. Nº de ref. de la librería 000846

Descripción: SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & CO, 1874. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. 1st Edition. Scribner, Armstrong & Co., 1874 FIRST edition, FIRST printing, FIRST State: Scarce true First state of the First edition of this title, published before the deluxe edition (and has a completely different board design). Scribner, Armstrong & Co. on the bottom of the spine. 52 illustratons by Riou. A stunning example of this title in green cloth. The original French edition came out in 1864. Scribner Armstrong¿s first American edition came out in November 1873, though dated 1874. The book is in beautiful condition with clean green boards with unusually strong bright gilt scene (of a waterfall and a raft) and titles to the front. The book has benefited from rebacking laying the original cloth back down. The book has no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square. Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. Professionally replaced end papers. All pages are present and overall remarkably clean for a Verne book with no stains but to 2 pages only on the very outer edge of the page, and no foxing. Please see many detailed images. A very handsome example of this scarce title in very clean collectible condition. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other Verne and SciFi titles. Descripción: SCRIBNER, ARMSTRONG & CO, 1876. Hardcover. Estado de conservación: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very scarce First Edition, First printing of the first combined edition of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND TRILOGY, which is the compilation of the 3 books, DROPPED FROM THE CLOUDS, ABANDONED, AND THE SECRET OF THE ISLAND by Jules Verne. Published in 1876 by Scribner, Armstrong & Co. New York. Please see image of the title page. First fully illustrated American edition. A very stunning book, grand in size, and in handsome blue cloth. The book is in beautiful condition with beveled blue cloth boards with a detailed gilt embossed scene to the front and spine. The book has benefited from being rebacked with all the original materials intact, with has made for a very strong, tight binding (so the book is quite readable!). Original end papers are present with no inscriptions, no prior owner names and no bookplates. The book has no edgewear and all the pages are present. The internal pages are overall clean for a Verne book with a small very faded water mark to the very outer corner of many pages (if you look carefully you can notice it in the images, but it is very faded so hard to notice). A few pages with curled corner edges. The pages otherwise have no handling marks, no stains but to about 4 pages, no writing, and no foxing. Please see many detailed images. This is a very thick book of 299 pages plus a small publishers catalogue at the end. A very handsome example of this title in collectible condition in stunning blue cloth and withOUT the excessive staining or excessive wear and broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books. Important scarce Verne book, presenting well on the shelf. Would make a wonderful gift for a Verne collector. Please note this is a very heavy thick book so International shipping is priced accordingly and with INTERNATIONAL Shipping incurring an additional $100 to ship using UPS. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for additional Verne and Sci-Fi titles. Nº de ref. de la librería 000783

Descripción: James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., 1873. Cloth. Estado de conservación: Good-Minus. Benot, L. with various engravers (steel engravings) Ilustrador. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A true first edition, with 1873 publication notice entered at the Office of the Librarian of Congress and 1873 printed at the bottom of the title page. The title was first published serially in 1872 in the French newspaper "Le Temps" as "Le Tour du Monde en Quatre-vingt Jours." The story is the author's most famous adventure-travel book. Of the author (1828-1905), Martin Seymour-Smith said, "Verne was a boy at heart; but an ingenious and inspired boy," noting that Verne's prophetic stories, "many of them set in the future, coincided with the rise of science" (Funk & Wagnalls Guide to Modern World Literature, p. 409). This lively narrative has the endlessly inventive Phileas Fogg, usually a sedentary London gentleman, and his French valet, Jean Passparteout (literally, "go everywhere"), crossing three continents and two oceans by railway, steamers, trading vessels, yachts, carriages, sail-sledges, and other means (including an elephant) in 80 days (a feat then considered almost impossible) in order to win a time sensitive wager with Fogg's fellow club members. He is pursued by private detective Fix, who believes he is a bank robber. Nail-biting delays and death-defying feats are many. A notable addition to Fogg's entourage is a charming Hindu widow, Aouda, whom he saves from ritual immolation (and later marries in England, to his great happiness). Needless to say, the winning of the bet is a cliff-hanger, relying upon his having crossed the international date line eastbound, therefore gaining a day (Benet's Reader's Encyclopedia, pp. 52, 1076; Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature, p. 73; The Penguin Companion to European literature, pp. 797-798). This book is bound in green cloth with bright gilt illustration and decoration on the front board and spine. It is embossed with black in-fill, except on the rear embossed board. Boards are beveled. It has brown end papers with a faded bookplate on the inside front board (upon which only "New York" can be made out under magnification). The title page is embossed with the previous owner's seal. The seal has raised the paper, but has not imprinted it with ink. There is an Intact tissue guard between the frontispiece portraying Phileas Fogg and the title page. The five stitch sewn binding is shaken but holding, with signature pp. 115-126 held by one stitch and page 308 (one of 54 full-page illustrations) loose and laid-in place. The is gilt on all 315 page edges. The volume has considerable shelf wear on the spine heel and crown, as well as corners (please see photograph). Original state binding. The interior pages are unmarked with very rare soiling. A drawing by Jules Verne of his little decked bark ("Bourset Malais," the "Saint Michael") is printed opposite the first page of the Introduction. Includes, in addition to the 54 full- page drawings rendered as steel engraving plates, a smaller illustration on page 297 ("Passepartout putting out the gas-light"). This is a very rare 1873 first edition. The story remains popular and has been adapted to many formats, including a Broadway theater play produced and directed by Orson Welles and with songs by Cole Porter, a motion picture film with a star-studded international cast (1956 Academy-Award Best Picture winner), a 1989 NBC miniseries headlined by Pierce Brosnan, Julia Nickelson-Soul, and Peter Ustinov, and a SCI-FI Channel television series that premiered in fall 2000 ("The Secret Adventures of Jules Verne") (see The New York Public Library Literature Companion, p. 479). This book is a very good candidate for further conservation and rebinding. Nº de ref. de la librería 004012
