Leather. Condición: Very Good. Not Stated Ilustrador. A scarce three volume set of the works of renowned French playwright Jean Racine; the second edition revised and enlarged by C. Gros. The second edition of this three-volume work in half calf bindings with marbled boards and gilt decoration to the spines. Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece to Volume I. Jean Racine (1639-1699) was one of the three great French playwrights of the 17th century. He primarily wrote tragedies such as Phèdre, Andromaque, and Athalie, but did write one comedy, Les Plaideurs. This set, now scarce in three volumes, was compiled by Jean Lecoutz de Levizac (1745-1813), and this second edition of this set was revised and enlarged by C. Gros. Volume I contains a brief biography of Jean Racine and overview of his works, along with his plays La Thébaïde, Alexandre le Grand, Andromaque, Les Plaideurs, and Britannicus. Volume II contains his plays Bérénice, Bajazet, Mithridate, Iphigénie, and Phèdre. Volume III contains his plays Esther and Athalie, as well as a selection of his poetry, essays and discourses. In half calf bindings. Externally fairly smart, with shelf wear to the boards and fading to the spines. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for the occasional spot. Very Good. book.
