Hardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Book has a few very low level library markings but NONE on the illustrated cover. wear to spine ends and edges but nothing serious. Book is solid and attractive with sort of strange and wonderful Machetanz illustrations not quite any other book I can think of from the era. The illustrator is one of the best ofg Alaska illustrators as well and is much collected there. Hinges tight, text has NO tears and NO marks of any kind.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Frederick Machetanz Ilustrador. This basketball story was the second of many books which, in the words of Marion Renick, combined "sports fundamentals with a story". The first was a football story from 1940, "Tommy Carries the Ball", and the third was "Steady: A Baseball Story" from 1942. (So all three of America's major sports were covered.) Although these three books were written entirely by Marion, her husband's name was added because it was thought at the time that no sports-centric story would be taken seriously if written solely by a woman - and James was a sportswriter, thus giving some credibility to the books. The highly unusual, and effective, pen & ink stipple drawings of Frederick Machetanz adorned all three books. This copy is inscribed and signed by the author on the half-title: "For Bruce - who is bound to hit the basket every time! Marion Renick". I'm not sure of the edition of this copy, but since there is no "A" on the copyright page and yet there is only mention of "Tommy Carries the Ball", and no mention of the next book, I assume this is a very early reprint from the same year, 1941. The book is very good, with some offset browning to endpapers, a bookseller's label, and slight yellowing to edges. Dust jacket is good plus - complete but with nicks and chips to edges (some strengthened with tape), a faded spine panel, a tear to top of rear panel and a soft crease to base of front panel. A very nice signed copy of this early sports story. Inscribed by Author(s).
