Full-Leather. George Scharf Jun and Owen Jones Ilustrador. Full leather with decorative border and decorative spine with raised bands; red leather title "Milman's Horace'. Melbourne Scotch College crest in gilt on the front board. The leather is lightly rubbed and scratched. Very attractive prize sticker on front paste down and marbled end papers. Sadly this magnificent copy has issues. The both end papers suffers from insect damage at the head, as do pages 43 to 46; the preliminaries are foxed as are pp 480 up to and including the back end paper. There is also irregular, mostly mild foxing interspersed throughout the book. There is an ownership signature on the blank page and the cotton bookmark, loose but still extant, has stained the hinge between pp 264 - 265; and lastly the pages have very mild damp affected waving, though they arenot stained and the majority of the pages are pure white. For all its faults, it remains a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, admittedly with a few dints and rust spots, but with inalienable class As the title implies, the complete works of Horace. 491 pages, illustrated, plus xiv "List of Illustrations. The Drawings from the Antique by George Scharf, Jun. The Ornaments by Owen Jones, architect. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
