Plain text dustwrapper with a dark beige coloured background with dark brown titles to the front panel and green and red titles to the backstrip. "The tantalising title of this book derives from Shakespeare's Autolycus, that engaging scoundrel who snapped up any "under considered trifles". A. D. Hope describes his traffic, unlike that of Autolycus, as being "in sheets", and the sheets as being the result of his curiosity and speculation over many years of exploring the corners and byways of literary history. The books that have aroused Hope's curiosity range wide and over time, from Beowulf to Kangaroo." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. A series of essays by the eminent Australian poet A. D. Hope on books that intrigued him. A little rubbing to the backstrip edges and to the book corners. Browning and some foxing to the text block edges and uniform browning of the internal text. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and there is sunning to the backstrip. A few marks to the dustwrapper panels. The results of insect activity can be seen to the rear fold over crease. From the present Age of Rationalisation Professor Hope directs his sharp, ironic, but always affectionate gaze towards the 18th century. Dubbed the Age of Reason but, in much of its boisterous detail neither rational, urbane nor enlightened, it is one of his favourite periods of history. He describes these 11 narrative poems as being "chosen mainly for amusement or irony, mostly related to actual persons and events, but treated with a certain degree of fantasy". They are set in the 18th century and written in the than most favoured form -- the heroic couplet. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Vintage press kit for Academy screenings of the 1988 film. Kit includes a 31 page press booklet, twelve black and white studio still photographs in their original glassine envelope, twelve clippings of "For Your Consideration" ads for the film, two ad clippings and an article clipping for the film, two copies of "Photo Captions for Color Slides," presumably for the screenings, and a Cineplex Odeon Films January Academy Screening Schedule bi-fold, all housed in a color Cineplex Odeon Films folder. Laid in is a bi-fold for the 1988 Robert Altman television film, "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial," starring Eric Bogosian, housing two clippings of articles and a promotional photograph of the cast. Based on the 1987 Pulitzer Prize nominated play by Eric Bogosian and Tad Savinar, and the 1987 book "Talked to Death: The Life and Murder of Alan Berg" by Stephen Singular. Bogosian stars as the acerbic Jewish radio talk show host Barry Champlain, who, as his show is about to go nationwide, must confront his distrust of the network management, his dysfunctional relationship with his wife, and the increasingly threatening neo-nazis angered by his outspoken opinions. One of director Oliver Stone's more modest and affecting films. Set in and shot on location in Dallas, Texas. Folder and contents, Near Fine.

Ephemera. Three letters from the noted Australian poet A. D. Hope, OBE, to a Miss G. Williams, relating to arrangements for events in New York City. Williams worked for the Poetry Center at the 92nd Street YMCA, a celebrated if unexpected literary venue. *** This small archive consists of 1) a 4-page autograph letter signed (5 by 8 inches); 2) a one-page letter (5-3/4 by 9 inches), sent from the Poetry Office of the Library of Congress and referring to Bill Smith, probably William Jay Smith, the Poet Laureate of the United States; and 3) a one-page typed letter signed with a holograph postscript (8-1/4 by 13-1/4 inches). *** The typed letter is dated 12 May 1967. The other letters are probably from early 1968, although the exact date is uncertain. Letters folded for mailing, but generally very good. All three are signed 'Alec Hope.'.
