Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Published by Lawrence Gilbertson, Hopetoun Street, Bathgate. First Edition(NAP), 1881. Xi and 386 pages. Tipped-in photographic frontispiece portrait. This book is an interesting mix of biography, literary analysis, and poetry. Take the time to zoom in and read the two page preface. The first chapter is all about Robert Burns, His Birth, His Education, As a Flaxdresser, As a Farmer, As an Exciseman, His Moral Character, As a Poet-His Poetic Career, The Poverty of Poets, His Popularity, His Position, Comparison with Byron, His Ideal. Next up James Hogg, then Minor Peasant Poets.and much, much more. Very Good. This book is very well bound. As you can see from the photos the gilt design on the front cover is very bright and the gilt lettering on the spine is quite visible. You can also see the strong red color on the back and front despite soiling from handling. The spine is clearly a little darkened. Look at the spine ends. Pretty darn good. And the corners are better than you might expect, with only the smallest spots of rub-through. There is a tiny loss of cloth at the edge of the spine visible in the First photo of the front cover. The pages have no writing or underlining. A few corners had been turned down leaving mild creases. There are occasional spots of soiling but in the main the pages are very, very clean. Many of the pages aren't totally flat--they have a little wave in the middle. And the last end paper has discoloration (penciling??) at the top edge. Please examine all the photos. Zoom in. It is possible to get this book at a lower price. That is if you don't mind that it's a library book or a repaired book. From my searches this is the ONLY copy for sale that is neither. With that in mind, I think it is generously priced.
