See his entry in the Oxford DNB. While shunning the limelight, Newcastle was an influential figure in British politics; it was through his lobbying that his cousin Sir Henry Clinton was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution. According to Timothy Mowl's 1996 biography of Horace Walpole, Newcastle was 'famed for an unusually large penis', which he deployed on both sexes. On one side of a 12 x 19 piece of laid paper, with large triangle cut at top right (not near signature). In good condition, lightly aged, with three neat fold lines (not through signature). Large clear signature 'Newcastle', between two short pieces of text in the hand of Henry Saxby, with his small neat signature 'Henry Saxby'. On the reverse is the 'Debentur' entry in Latin, with marginal note 'Out of 1/3 Tonns since 8th. March 1706.' In another hand at foot: 'Examd: Record: 11 Oct: 1773 [.]'. Most of the side with the signature is blank, with portrait orientation, while the entry side is filled with landscape text, with slight loss through diagonal crop at bottom right.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Newcastle has already been informed of Price's wish to be placed in the Colonial Office by 'the Duke of Roxburghe and others, whose interest in his wefare, would have great weight with me, if I felt that I could consistently with the present claims upon me, hold out any hope of complying with Mr. Price's request'. He is 'not in a position to say what arrangements' he intends to make 'in consequence of the death of Captain Booth', as he is 'very desirous of extending, as far as possible, a system of promotion in the Colonial Service', and has to consider 'many who have many years of residence in unhealthy climate to found their appeals upon'. one-page folio with conjugate blank leaf. (horizontal & vertical folds). NEWCASTLE, Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of [1720-1794]. Manuscript Document, Signed, dated January 23, 1773. Addressed to and signed by Lord Newcastle, as Auditor of the Receipt of His Majesty's Exchequer, the document requests payment to Edward Harland for his services as one of His Majesty's Messengers attending him as Chancellor and Under-Treasurer of the Exchequer and for his services provided to the King. Also signed by Lord Northington and Edward Harland. Newcastle was reputed to have been a lover of Horace Walpole, with whom he quarreled and separated while on the Grand Tour. He was also the cousin of Sir Henry Clinton, a career army officer, for whom the Duke lobbied successfully to be appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution.
