Condición: Very good. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1835). (1835). Very good. - Small octavo, brown cloth. The spines are perished and thus lacking and the cloth is worn at the corners. 204 pages; and 196 pages respectively, illustrated with extra engraved pictorial title pages, 2 engraved frontispieces, and 5 plates. The hinges are cracked and there are glue stains to the pastedowns and damage to the endpapers of volume 2. Though a few signatures are slightly pulled and there is some slight darkening, the contents are in remarkably very good condition and this set would be well- worth rebacking. A wonderful juvenile on the Colonial history of New York told in the form of conversations with children. This little set covers the history of the State of New York starting with the discovery of New York by Henry Hudson, the subsequent purchase of land by the Dutch from the Indians and the West India Company. The many governors of the state appear in chronological order as the author relates the many early conflicts with the Indians and the English. The subsequent acquisition of New York by the English and the later war with the French. The history continues in an entertaining manner up through the American Revolution. A feel for the entertaining manner in which the history of the state is related can be gleamed from the following example of chapter headings: "Uncle Philip.Tells the Children something about General Schuyler, who was very much beloved by the Indians -- Count Frontenac attacks the Mohawks -- Driven back by Schuyler -- Suffering of the Armies.Talks about Robert Fulton, and tells a story about Christopher Columbus -- Cruelty of Count Frontenac -- Murder of an old Onandaga Sachem by the French." and so on.
