Condición: Good. New York: J. A. Hoisington, 1841. 1841. Good. - Octavo, brown cloth titled in gilt on the spine with decorations in blind on both covers. The covers are rubbed & bumped. The head & tail of the spine are torn with pieces out & a stain obliterates several letters of the titling. xii & 341 pages plus 6-page publisher's catalog. The front hinge is cracked. There is an owner's ink name on the title page. The top corner of 1 leaf is creased & there is occasional foxing & staining. Good only. First edition.The book is an attack on Universalism and an examination of its purported errors.

Tissue guard has a horizontal tear. No owner names or marks.

Original embossed brown cloth, gilt-lettered on spine. Binding worn, pale browning and dampstaining. Provenance: James L. Ward (contemporary ownership signature on front free endpaper). FIRST EDITION. ".a most interesting description of Cape Town . which says, 'The habitations . so low and so quaint, with their gables to the streets, covered with whitewash and adornded with venetians, each with its stoop or porch before it after the manner of the old Knickerbockers, seemed exceedingly odd. The small window-panes, and singular sign-boards, and the absence of shop windows, had a singular effect.'" (Mendelssohn, p.119).

Hinges cracked, with front hinge split through at endpaper (internal); brief chipping to cloth at crown and heel; boards well preserved and text complete, clean and unmarked; a solid, Good copy. Missionary travels in South Africa, primarily in Cape Town and Saldhana Bay.

Bound into recent patterned cloth titled in gilt and new endleaves and blanks, lacking the half-title (if issued), and textblock likely trimmed a bit but still with healthy margins. Small owner label on front pastedown and contemporary owner name ("Joseph Alward") penciled on title page. Binding gilt rubbed, foxing on several plates and tissue guards, as well as the title page, small remnant of a newspaper article laid down onto blank final page with a bit of bleed-through, trifle musty, very good. The interior is otherwise quite bright.
