Some of the first pages are untrimmed; "The aim of this little work is simply to try and place at the service of amateurs a handbook such as the writer felt the want of when first interested in Chinese porcelain, explaining the technical terms, and giving other information likely to be useful or interesting in connection with the subject, in as simple a way as possible.(.) Under the headings "Symbols", "Animals", and elsewhere, when the information given has been obtained from books, it is simply reproduced with the name of the work quoted from, thus enabling readers to turn to it for themselves should they wish to follow the subject further." excerpt from the preface by W.G. Gulland (volume 1).; "The attempt to squeeze into moderate sized handbook a comprehensive account of Chinese porcelain naturally resulted in the crowding out of much that is interesting, so in this volume the opportunity has been availed of to simplify some points that received but cursory notice in the first." excerpt from the preface by W.G. Gulland (volume 2).

Second Edition stated. Good only copy, bound in finely woven green linen cloth and stamped brightly in gilt on the front boards and faded gilt on the spine. The spine is mottled and oxidized. With some leeching ot color to the top edges of the boards and along the spine. With the previous owner's name"Edward Cunningham, Westwood, Mass. July, 1915" written in ink on the front endpaper. Internally very good and tight with 485 black and white illustrations on heavy stock. Laid in is a 2-page letter addressed to Mr. Cunningham from the noted Chinese porclain collector Thomas Lindall Winthrop and signed by him. Apparently, Winthrop contributed information and photos for the book by Gulland. In addition to the ALS letter, there is a typed letter from Hatchards, Booksellers to their Majesties the King & Queen datged 27th July, 1915 to the book's owner Mr. Edward Cunningham regarding their ability to supply a copy of Monkhouse's book on Chinese Poircelain, and signed Hatchards. Mr. Winthrop s letter is as follows:-23d June38n Beacon St. until tomorrow. Afterward at "Winthroop Cottage," NahantMy dear Cunningham, The books relating exclusively to "Chinese porcelain" are not man. There is that which I referred to yesterday "A history and description of Chinese Porcelain, by Cosmo Monkhouse, with notes by Dr. Bushell C.M.G." published by Cassell Co. This is one volume, 175 pages, many excellent plates. I think that Monkhouse was issued to subscribers at 30/ and I was told in London that copies of the first issue, had become worth £10., but I fancy that it has been re-issued at about the original price. There is the book written by Mr. Gulland, entitles simply, "Chinese porcelain" published bye Chapman & Hall in 1898 at 17/ , full of illustrations in black and white. The 2nd volume introduces many notes from my letters to the author, which I allowed Gulland to make nay use of, and I was abroad and could not take the time to re write for publication. In this 2d volume are many plates of our porcelain, now at 38 Beacon St. I have seen a new book published (I think published) in this country in two vast volumes, with many plates. I don t intent to buy it, and am not encouraged by my friends. Price $25. There is one large quarto, written in French, by M. Grandidier, the collector of the Chinese porcelains at the Louvre, which is one of the four great collections in the world. The volume contains many good illustrations in black and white. The author, an old acquaintance of mine, is now dead. If "Monkhouse" is now procurable at anything like the first subscription price, I think that would be your book, as the colour-prints have been thought advisable, the last book mentioned on the last page contains many but very poor colour-plates. If you really dislike the shape of your Kang-ke beaker with ring mark, and would like to exchange it for something wlse, I would take if from you at $250.00, or about that. We enjoyed your visit extremely, and thought you and your missis very good to old people. With kind remembrances to her, Yours sincerely, T.L. Winthrop.
