Spines faded Spotting to the closed page edges. Bumping to the top and bottom of the spine and minor shelf wear to the board edges. Originally published in 1874, without illustrations, historian John Richard Green began work in 1869, having been given a diagnosis of six months to live. Intended to be an account 'not of English Kings or English Conquests, but of the English People', Green was criticised at the time for the omission of major historical events such as battles.Illustrated with thirteen colour plates, included maps, to volume I. With nine plates to volume II, eight of which are in colour. Volume III illustrated with a folding colour frontispiece and five plates. Volume IV illustrated with three colour maps and one folding plate.Collated, complete, but with one plate detached and loosely inserted to volume IV, and lacking part of the folding plate to volume IV.With the armorial bookplate of Ernest A Taylor to each front pastedown, alongside the binder's label of G. Pulman & Sons.With an inscription to a front blank of each volume. In signed cloth bindings. Bumping to spine heads and tails. Damp staining to front board of volume I. Each volume has a bookbinder's stamp for Pearse, Warrington, to the verso of the front free-endpaper. Featuring numerous illustrations, including tissue guarded coloured plates. With tissue guarded frontispiece maps to Volumes I and IV, and a fold out frontispiece of Old London Bridge to Volume III. Each front pastedown has an armorial bookplate above the nameplate of W. Ernest Atkin. Each front free-endpaper has the pictorial bookplate of Ronald Cuttell. A photograph of the gravestone of John Richard Green, labelled 'Menton, Cote d'Azur' in ink, has been pasted to the front blank of Volume I. Complete in four volumes. In uniform half morocco bindings, with gilt top edges. Externally, some shelf wear. Internally, firmly bound and bright, with light marginal foxing. Small marginal marks to pages xxvi-50 of Volume I and p1483-1553 of Volume IV. A pleasing set. Very Good. book.
