Complete copies of the work seem to be rare and the photographs used for the present book have been taken from a fine copy in the Library of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. Although only printed once in China the work has an added importance in that a Japanese adaptation of it, Wakan Sansai Zue, 'Japanese~Chinese tripartite (picture) arrangement', was published in 1715. As a large collection of illustrations from the late Ming period the book has an obvious value for those interested in Chinese and Japanese art while its rarity has made it difficult to consult. Many of the plates suggest by their design that they were copied from older sources, particularly album paintings, and the model for one is ascribed to a T'ang artist of the eighth century A.D. Selected for their artistic qualities and iconographic interest the 120 plates reproduced here only represent a small part of the whole. The work runs to 150 fascicules. The texts accompanying them vary greatly in length; some have the title alone, others a page or more about the subject. All the texts which appear on the woodcuts reproduced have been translated by Graham Hutt, who has also examined the longer texts from which any passages of especial interest have been included, and has discussed points of interpretation. The book is of interest to graphic artists as showing a range of woodcuts from one of the best periods of Chinese book illustration and will also be useful to collectors and others interested in Chinese and Japanese art and the decorative motifs used. The author is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and has studied Chinese art and calligraphy for some years.
