Juni 1823 zum ersten Male Goethe gegenüberstand, erfüllte sich ihm ein langgehegter Wunsch. Seit der Hausierersohn aus Norddeutschland auf seinem mühseligen autodidaktischen Bildungsgang Gedichte Goethes kennengelernt hatte, träumte er von einer solchen Begegnung. Der überaus freundliche Empfang im Weimarer Haus am Frauenplan übertraf selbst seine kühnsten Erwartungen. Er wurde schon bald zum Vertrauten und Mitarbeiter des mehr als vierzig Jahre älteren Dichters, der von Eckermann sagte: . . . er hat sich mit reinem Gemüt und hellem Geiste an mein Wesen und Wirken angeschlossen und wird mir daher zum wünschenswerten Beistand. So beglückend es für Eckermann war, in der Nähe des bewunderten und geliebten Meisters zu leben frei von Spannungen war sein Verhältnis zu dem außerordentlichen Manne nicht. Denn der Dichterfürst beanspruchte mit großer Selbstverständlichkeit den ganzen Eckermann , ohne ihn je aus seiner bedrücken- den finanziellen Lage durch feste Anstellung und Bezahlung zu erlösen. Selbst das wichtigste Produkt dieser lebenslangen Beziehung Eckermanns, seine Gespräche mit Goethe , brachte dem Autor nicht das große Glück , das er sich davon erhofft hatte. Nur wenige Zeitgenossen wie Varnhagen von Ense zollten seinen Aufzeichnungen die Anerkennung, die ihnen gebührt als einem einzigartigen Kompendium, wie es nur aus dem unmittelbaren Erlebnis der Persönlichkeit Goethes entstehen konnte. Erst lange nach Eckermanns Tod wurden seine Gespräche weltberühmt und avancierten zum meistgelesenen Buch der Literatur um Goethe. In völliger Verkennung ihres Verfassers wurden sie oft ausschließlich als literarisches Testament des großen Dichters aufgefaßt.
